where do you put the nice road bikes? in the communal hallways or bring them into the flats (can you do that?). Is it alright leaving them in the halls or.

I have one in the bathroom ( MTB ), my 2 road bikes in my bedroom ( big room ), and my fixie is locked to the rails inside the building.

there's a room for each bike in Castle Blorg! It's a bike sanctuary.

I rented an apartment for four years. Kept three bikes on the balcony and it was never a problem.

I take it you didn't ask landlord or anything, just went ahead and put them in your room after you moved in?

And no one risks a nice bike in the hallways then no, no worth it I presume?
just that I was looking at a place and the guy said no bikes in rooms, theres (a tiny) space for them beside stairs, which would be grand for a cheap commuter, but not sure Id want to risk my racebike.

did it take a bit of looking around to get an accomodating landlord, or space needed. Im loooking at 1 beds and the doors are tiny Im not sure youd get a bike though sokme of the doors without twisting the bars!

    Correct :D

I have moved a couple of times in the past couple of years and the bikes have been a bit of an issue while trying to find a place. One landlord wanted me to leave it on the roof top ... but this one only thought i had 1 bike ... and in the end agreed I could leave it in the living room on top of a mat, but I didn;t take that place. I am moving again in 10 days :) I have a kind of balcony I can leave 2 of the bikes on, and the good bike will live in the hall of the flat and the commuter will need to fit in a bike tent.
If the balcony is covered then it should be ok.

sounds like Im better off not saying anything, and just moving it in, and probably putting a matt down or something like that. cheers.

Yeah it can be awkward alright. I got lucky with my place, the landlord is a relation so didn't mind the bikes in the apartment. Still had hassle from the management company about bringing the bike through common area, so now, instead of a 10 meter walk from my apart to the apartment block entrance, I have a 50m walk out the back through a garage. It's fine though, I'm happy that the bikes are secure.

I do leave the fixie downstairs in the garage, well locked up.

edit - It is best to say it to the landlord and not have to be skulking around. If they don't like it, just go somewhere else, there isn't a shortage of places.

A yoga mat fits a bike and is thick enough. And also has dual purpose, as they re great for under a turbo too! If you only have the 1 good bike, then I wouldn't mention it and move in.

Mine go inside. House rules do say no bikes allowed inside however I only found that out after a year of bringing it in. Never had any problems with landlord or management however.
There would be no chance of leaving the bike outside. There is "secure" bike storage but it some of those wall mounted wheel locks in the bin room.

If you get a place with wooden floors, I can't see there being any problem. Near impossible to stain them and very easy to wash afterwards.

the thread on cleaning got me thinking. How do apartment dwellers look after the maintenance / cleaning end of things? the bath, with a bit of cif afterwards?

For storage - THIS FTW - have it at the back of the sitting room so its not in the way in the hall.

Where I'm living I cant leave it in the communal hallway - management co freak out when kids leave their push scooter things there even - and there's a wee space in the carpark but apparently bikes are regularly stolen from there so not an option.

If the weather's too bad to wash it outside then +1 on bath w. CIF but normally it's just outside where there's more space

I'd be murdered if my bikes got anywhere further than the hall, never mind the bath. I'm in a duplex, so not a flat, but I don't have a garden either. I tend to clean it outside in front of the door, but if I happen to be heading down to my parents, I'll throw the bike up on the rack and bring it with me wash it down there.

    +1 - I'm a blatant opportunist for that myself :D

I've a BBB mechanics stand that I leave at home (d parents cycle also so it's only fair) and that makes a much easier job of it than the leaning over and around the while washing it up here

If you have room, the bike cave seems a great idea.

I'have tried DIY shower curtains and Ducttape ... only works with good shower curtain :) not 2 quid the cheap ones you get at the bargain store ...

I use one of these. Pricey enough but durable and easy to fit over the bike. Covers the drivetrain so I've never had any trouble with rusting. The bike will get wet if it's absolutely lashing down, but not enough to drench the bike.

It can lift off in high winds though, so I use a couple of binder clips to keep it in place.

Cheers guys, I might have to look into something along the lines of these if I can't find anywhere suitable in the apartment to put it.

Has anyone a picture of how one of these looks mounted with a bike onboard?

Have two of them - haven't used them though - couldn't find a block wall I could get away with drilling into to fit it :p

Very good and simple solution to bike storage if you've a place to put em though

+1, I bought Lidl ones (basically identical to these) ages ago and am only putting them up now. You would probably get away with screwing these into a wall stud through plasterboard, unless the bike weighs an absolute ton. The problem is finding a stud near where you want to store the bike(s).

I tried to use plasterboard fittings, which turned out to be rubbish, shredding the plasterboard and then shearing off. Take two with better ones this weekend...

I've used them. Only issue is you have to mount them high enough so the rear wheel is off the ground. Means you have to lift the whole bike for the last bit when hanging it.

Once hanging it's pretty stable but the full height of the bike protrudes into the room/shed. Handy if you have the depth but not the width. Otherwise, go for a bike-parallel-to-the-wall hanger.
