Just FYI, thats a 2x1TB drive. By having two drives, there's obviously an increased chance of one of the drives failing.

Personally i'd spend the extra few quid and get a single-drive 2TB external HDD. Amazon have a 2TB Western Digital for about £140.

The probability of a single drive failing is the same no matter how many drives you have (assuming same reliability across all drives). However the probability of loosing all 2tb of your data is lower with two drives - obviously.

Performance may be higher with 2 drives but energy consumption will probably be higher.

If there's a 1% chance of a drive failing, having two means the probability of a drive failing is double, no?

That is correct.


And if you have 100 drives there is a 100% chance a drive will fail.

If the data is striped across both drives where each file is spread across two drives (RAID-0), then the probability of losing all you data is doubled, since a remaining working drive has only essentially half of each file on it.

If they are used as two separate drives, the probability of losing some data is doubled - i.e., the same would happen if you bought two separate drives.

Yep, 1.5TB is about the sweet spot in value at the moment.

But if 2TB was essential, i'd be going for the aforementioned WD 2TB on Amazon. £140 (free shipping). ~€160
