Rathmines - Dun Laoghaire commute

    Hi folks,
am considering moving out of apartment in Donnybrook to rent in Rathmines. My drive from Donnybrook to work in the National Rehab in Rochestown Avenue, Dun Laoghaire currently takes about 40minutes in the morning. Saw an apartment that I really liked in Rathmines town centre but am a bit worried about the commute - I would think that all the routes that lead back to the N11 are chockers in the morning, don't particularly want to add on loads more time to morning journey but don't really want to get the 46A either (sorry all the green transport people!)
Any advice or does anyone drive this route? Much appreciated...

From Rathmines to Dartry / Clonseagh can be utterly appalling in the morning. No left turn at the Swan Centre onto Castlewood Avenue. Heading towards the city and then up Richmond Hill and through Ranelagh might work, but Ranelagh and Appian Way can be tricky enough. All those West-East roads are chaotic in the morning, as bad as the citybound roads.

Walking to Leeson Street Bridge and getting a bus would be eminently more sensible. Note there is an archway (not on googlemaps) from Richmond Hill to Mounpleasent Square that provides an alternative route.

If you are planning on moving anyway what about something closer to the area?

40 mins from Donnybrook to there even at rush hours sounds excessive as you are against traffic. You could cycle it in 40 mins.

sadly my other half wants to live close to town, he also needs to be near to the Luas for work. I know I should really get off my ass & either cycle/use public transport but work is so heavy I like the luxury of sitting into my car! I kind of knew it wasn't going to be easy but was just hoping someone was going to say it's not that bad/won't add that much to the route. 40minutes already is probably enough, it's rare that you'd do it in 30 though.
Any other ideas I'd love to hear!

The only public transport I would use to get to Rochestown Ave is the 46A to Bakers corner, which is very frequent. To be close to the Luas and 46A and be near town, you would live between Leeson Street and Ranelagh.

Rathmines to Rochestown Ave would be a nightmare at rush hour.

If you can get to Leeson st, 145 to Cabinteely then walk up Johnstown ave. The same with the 46a to bakers.

one future option might be Luas to Cherrywood, then no. 7 bus to Rochestown Ave.

unfortunately the Luas doesn't open until late 2010 and only a tiny number of 7s currently serve Cherrywood.

40 minutes from Donnybrook to Rochestown? I live on Rochestown Ave and I work in CC so I drive to UCD and bus it from there but I make if from my place to UCD in 40 min but the traffic is always much much heavier going into CC than coming out?

You must come the whole way out the N11. Just a tip but if you drive as far as mount merrion avenue and swing a left, through blackrock and onto rochestown from there you'll deffo make Donnybrook to Rochestown in 30 min of less.

Rathmines is just a bit of a pain.....think of how long it takes you currently then add on how long it takes to get from Rathmines to D'brook....whether its through Ranelagh or Milltown its just choked the whole way...

Maybe Stillorgan area...that's not TOO far from town, you'll be in work in no time and your bf has the luas.

    Good luck!

Green Line or Red Line? If you move to near where he works, that is one commute instead of two. Consider somewhere like Dundrum. 15 minutes to St. Stephen's Green and a lot less painful that driving in Rathmines.

Only disadvantage is cost of taxis after a night out.

    Driving.
Southbound Ranelagh, Clonskea, Goatstown, Sandyford Beacon, M50 Southbound OFF at Cherrywood, follow the road 'Wyattville' to the Graduate pub roundabout and you know where your going from there.

It all depends are your exact location in Rathmines.

After all the dithering the apartment was let yesterday.. :( To be honest I think it was going to be madness - everyone was saying that trying to cut accross is really heavy in the morning. So back to the drawing board, between the two of us being so difficult to please it looks like we could possibly be homeless in January! (happy christmas, eh?)
Trying not to get stressed, it'll all work out, if it's meant to be etc.. Thanks for the suggestions lads. Happy Christmas
