Hi folks, I need some advise (again).

I am looking into getting an external hard drive for my Imac. The speed of the internal drive is 7200 rpm.

Does this mean the external drive needs to be at the same speed?
I am interested in getting this http://store.apple.com/ie/product/TX116ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0Nw&mco=MTM0NTA4ODc&p=1&s=alpha.

The rpm on this one is 5400. Will this cause me any problems?

    Thanks

    Rock.

Matching internal and external drive speeds makes no difference.
A 5400 drive would be ok for backup but would be a little slow for recording.
    7200 is much better.
I record to a 10000 raptor drive and it flies.

    Thanks for the advise Trackmix.

So I can benefit from having a faster external drive than the internal drive speed? (when using the external drive for recording)

don't forget that you want firewire and not usb too.
Format it using disk utility to mac os extended non journaled.

That's one of my main reasons for looking at this particular model.

I'm getting a new i5 Imac for Christmas:D Which uses FW800. My Duet is FW400. I want to use the External drive as a hub so I can daisy chain into the imac.

The linked external drive has both fw400 and fw800 inputs. I'm hoping that I can kill two birds with one stone, still use my Duet and have a decent external drive.

That'll be on next years letter to Santa so:D

Will it be faster then Firewire 800?

usb3 is a con...hard drives are still only running at 60/70meg read/write so there's really no justification in going to usb.
Flash memory is what's driving the usb3 gain..so unless you plan to get a SSD it's only a waste of time.

e-SATA might be an even better option- given that you can easily get an add-on card, and external e-sata harddrives are now widely available?

Yeah, FW800 is 800Mb/s(thats 100 in MB/s) where as USB 3 is meant to be capable of speeds of up to 5Gb/s! When that will actually be the case isnt clear. The ones on the market already are about 275MB/s which is more than double the speed of FW800.

But to add to the confusion, FW3200 is also on the way!:)

The relentless march of progress eh?

    Thanks guys.

I opted for one of these in the end. http://www.wdc.com/global/images/products/img2/300/wdfMyBook_Studio_2Q.jpg

It's a Western Digital mybook studio edition II.

Hopefully this will keep me going for a while.
