Dublin club scene....how does it rate?

Hey, was just wondering what do people generally think of Dublin's club scene? I personally do not know too much about it so my opinion can very well be a load of **** but from going out in Dublin I find it hard to find a good spot. I could very well be going to all the wrong places but I just find that some of the popular spots in town that are a bit alternative are just full of scene type girls/boys (mostly girls) and they are just going to places like the Button factory coz its hip instead of going to coppers. I'm not saying this about everybody of course but just from the few times I have been there this was the vibe I got. I know Dublin is at a major disadvantage with its licensing laws so places have to all close by like 2.30 or what ever so it is never going to be as off the wall as places in England or Germany but where is all the mayhem? Dublin has so many people big in to music but I have never seen any club in Dublin where people are goin nuts to a good DJ. From nights I have had in London and Berlin (which are obviously gonna be bigger & better) the general scene in good clubs is people going pretty crazy and having a great time. Drugs or no drugs the atmosphere is so much better. So anyone care to comment on whether this is true or whether I am just being snobby & ignorant?

The Dublin Clubbing scene is a horrible enigma wrapped in a pile of shiite. If you're talking about underground nights the reason people wont go mad to djs as much as you see abroad is because honestly its a city of begrudgers.People wont go mad to Dublin djs and as much as people will disagree its a fact. All the djs you see playing around all the time are friends of friends.

The whole place is stagnant as fook. When big name djs are in town its good and teres some great Irish acts like Donnacha Costello who dont play anywhere near often enough.Other than that you have a long list of nobodys who think they are somebodys.

    Rubbish.

Like you said OP, and licensing hours have a lot to answer for, but on a good night Irish crowds are the best, the average punter at a small night here is very clued up and isn't afraid to dance...

nonsense42 is always trotting out the same line about "begrudgers" before complaining about everyone else getting gigs. lol.

To be honest, im fairly young to have any knowledge of the dublin clubbing scene, but I do remember one lad in his late 20s telling me that the scene is very clicky among the DJs, as in, if you wanted to DJ somewhere, youd find it very hard - something like a 'who the **** are you' attitude would come into play.

Correct that assumption if im wrong,

well in fairness to nonsense, it does seem to be the same dj's over and over again frequenting the smaller clubs. all you have to do is look at the flyers and compare them to previous ones. all the names stay the same, occasionally with some dropouts.

i have heard about gigs before, that we're being promoted before any lineups were revealed and i've been able to list off about 10 of the 15 that played that day, and so we're a number of others. the partys are good, but in fairness to nonsense, i agree, the dj's are all the same. ive never experience any begrudgery though.

in terms of atmosphere though the best i've ever experienced has been in ireland. definitely. but not in some time. i personally think the fact that the pills are ****e and a lot of the people in the clubs are using cocaine, the inhibitions of old are not as free as before. some of the nights i had in the temple, redbox, music centre and more were ****ing electric. absolute mayhem, some nights. but not really anymore. i mean there can be moments during some nights that are good, but back when i first started going out those moments were hours.

hopefully the laundry nights get going again, they had very few of the usual names on the listings from what i could see and had some names i'd heard of but hadnt seen on flyers before.

Yeah I sort of feel like I missed out on the 'good old days' in Dublin's club scene. I am 23 now and when I was about 16 I remember reading slate magazine if any of ye remember this. Anyway I remember having one issue at home where it was doing a run through of the club scene and the impression I got was that Dubin was a very happening spot. It's just every where I end up going out these days its all the same. The atmosphere is always pretty much the same and I never have a mad nite unless I'm at a party or out in a different city abroad for the weekend. Lol, sort of feel like I am missing all the action or something. Anyway heading to new york for the summer so there should be no shortage of big nights out there. Would love to see Dublin getting more active on the club scene though as you really can't beat Irish crowds when they are having fun.

He does make some valid points though.

The draconian licenscing laws in Ireland are a big factor as to why it's bad in Dublin for clubbing, i suppose i was lucky in the sense when i done most of my raving some clubs (like Sides/Asylum) opened all night, or even after those clubs closed years later going to other clubs that closed at 3am, there was always after hours places to go, it's dreadful though when a club closes at say 2.30/3am and you may have to then go home unless there is a party on.

It's absolute madness that a city like Dublin has no clubs that open all night, Leeds is a but smaller than Dublin but clubs here open pretty much all night, some clubs until 9am if you can last that long,im goin out on NYE to a club here for a fiver and that closes at 4am, then im heading to Back To Basics which closes at 6am but the afterparty goes on until noon although i doubt ill last that long.

Yeah was in leeds last year visiting a friend and ended up in a big club that went till like 6am but I left bout 5am. Pretty much everybody on drugs and going nuts to some quality dj's. Was really shocked for the first like half hour in the club how open everybody was just taken stuff and the security didn't seem to mind at all but the general atmosphere was people really there for the music and having a great time regardless of whether or not they were on anything. Big English cities seem to have huge club scenes and as a result I think there are far more young people that are in to dance and electronic music than over here. I've noticed this from meeting english people my age and it is obviously largely due to the fact that they have much more of a scene going on with proper clubs that open late etc. Have only really started developing a proper taste for electronic music over the past 2 years and it is a pitty that Dublin can't have a better scene but with our licening laws its so much harder. Really tired of the repetative 2 hours in club and then home or if your lucky back to some sort of a party.

I think it's a great idea. Make it so!

People can choose for themselves weather or not they want to go to your event, no need to set up an account to persuade us.

Whats in it for the venue?

On Topic the clubbing scene in Dublin is great if you know where to go. For such a small scene we get to see some of the best playing here.

the government over here haven't got a clue, they want people 2 spend more 2 try help the economy but yet give us no incentive 2 do so. i mean 4 the same price ya pay 2day 4 about 4 hours in a club if your lucky, ya got between 8 - 12 hours in some cases back in the 90's and early 00's.

they're definately goin 2 have 2 change with the times, after all, we're not holy catholic ireland any more ruled by the church as we were back in the middle of the last century.

as for the atmosphere in clubs, i always have a great time in places like THE VAULTS etc, and the majority of the people in the clubs do be goin nuts, so i cant see where this observation of clubs bein drab compared 2 other countries has come from. maybe if i went abroad 2 europe or england clubbin i'd see a difference, but as far as i'm concerned i always have a great time out in dublin regardless.;)

its only a matter of time now until they have to change the licensing laws to conform with the rest of the EU...... so until then all the promoters can do is their best.... which they seem to have done for 2010..... theres no way around the closing times.
