Negative to digital?

Hey all,

Just have a question to see if anyone would know; a few years ago, 2004-2006 or thereabouts, before i had dabbled in digital cameras at all, i attended a few WWE events in Dublin, and took pictures and got them developed.

You know when, after you get pictures developed, they give you the negatives in small strips? Well i have a load of those, and i was wondering if anyone knows if there's anything I can do to get them changed over into digital form?

I remember a few years ago, i brought photos down to a chemist to get them developed, and I was given the choice of getting the photos developed as normal (into physical photographs) or put onto a CD.

So I was wondering, is there anyway, or anywhere i can go, to get my negatives turned into digital photos on a CD as i did before?

Or am i long past having that option available to me?

Very easily done.
Almost every camera shop/pharmacy etc is now selling digital scanners to do exactly that.
They seem to start at around the €50 - €60 mark so reasonable enough.
Mine is built into my printer/copier which is even handier again.

it is still possible to scan film and turn it into digital files. if you want good quality (they can scan the film at high or not so high resolution which will affect your print quality) i would stay away from chemists as they are limited in what they can do by the machines they use + they wouldnt have great knowledge about scaning film. i suggest going to a place that still process their own film. speak to the guy operating the machine and you should get better results than the chemist.cheers!

they are not all the same. the most common consumer negs are the 35mm (36 actually, but always reffered to as 35mm). best way to tell is to measure it:the frame should be 36x24mm (and it will work with the one you posted the link to)

as for the scaner itself - resolution is one thing to look at. and i'm sure that things like contrast and color space of the scanner are important also.

speed of scaning may be a factor also if you have loads to scan

That's exactly what you're looking for but DO NOT pay that much for it. That's very expensive for that type of scanner.

Well does anyone know of any decent online retailers? I don't trust eBay when it comes to electronics, and I'm in Drogheda, where a decent photography/computer store is non-existant (as far as I know, anyway).

Head into town and have a look around. I've seen them priced around the €70-80 mark.

Pixmania.ie have a few if you wanted to order one online or Maplin have a few (which look the very same, and i think some are on sale) if you wanted to walk in a pick one up. They have been in Aldi before if you are not in a rush you could wait to see if they come in again soon as i think they were priced ar €50.

Those scanners are widely regarded as being pretty crap. They're just some cheap 5mp digicam mounted in such a way as to be able to scan the film.
