Boot Problem, Win XP

    Hi guys,

Im trying to fix a laptop that basically boots as far as the Windows XP logo screen, hangs for a few mins and then flashes a BSOD for a millisecond and reboots. I then tried to boot into safe mode and it hangs on the file "agp440.sys" for about the same time and the same result. I have searched for fixes but most suggest either running chkdsk /r from recovery console or plugging out/disabling different components and hardware as they can cause this also. My problem here is that the BIOS of the laptop is very basic and doesnt have much room to make changes and DOS doesnt recognise the C:. When i go to the first step of a fresh install, it does see the C: but with only 1MB in use. Im guessing then that the HD is malfunctioning but just wondering if anyone has come across a similar problem and found a fix? The Laptop isnt mine so id prefer if at all possible to fix it without having to format.

Sorry if the story is all over the place but hard to explain it simply :)

    Any help much appreciated.

    Thx,

    Nal

If it's a borked registry they try to revert back to an older SYSTEM file

use the manu's diags to rule out a broken drive

I googled agp440.sys, and found a microsoft article. It was very easy to find.

One boots with the OS disk. Press R for recovery console. Enter administrator password if you have it. If not, I suggest press enter. Enter the number of HD if it is recognised e.g. 1 Enter. Type listsvcs. If you see agp440.sys BOOT there is some way of disabling it that I forget. Perhaps disable agp440.sys Windows may find another driver istead.
