if you give us a bit more info about the car, it might help.

For example, if I was in the market, I'd ask:
    mileage
    service history
    who services the car
    tax due when
    nct due when
    when was timing belt done
when were the front wishbones done

I don't think he was joking, that's the first place I would be putting it. Also it is 10 years old in less than 2 weeks, what you paid for it 3 years ago is irrelevant in today's market. If the timing belt and water pump were changed in it recently then you may get close to €1500 for it.

    *bought

I notice this a hell of a lot lately, particularly with English people that they confuse 'bought' with 'brought'. They are two distinctly different words and it drives me mad.

thanks for your replies guys, i cant believe that it would only fetch that much. it has 90000 miles, timing belt was done at 80k, wishbone was changed 3 months ago. nct is till 12/10, in great condition. 17 inch alloys, new tyres. i may try put it up on adverts but i dont know if its worth selling if i can only get that much for it!!!!!

It's worth what the market will pay for it, and they rarely lie.

Tbh, would you pay > €2000 for a 10 year old Alfa Romeo?

    Actually.... don't answer that.

The 1.6l was the basic entry level engine and as such is less desirable than the 1.8 or 2.0.

Unfortunately a lot of the early 156s are going to reach end of life now with the 10 years scrappage and 1 year nct rule.

Its hard to see how a it would fetch more than 1000 (and that is assuming good history and condition)

I have a '99 2.5l 156 which is still in rude health with 140k miles on it. probably only worth ~1k - even a small tip now with it would make it an insurance write off - practically unsellable now due the new rules for nct and massive annual road tax.... its the price to pay for the unmistakable sound of the last alfa made v6 - windows down, 3.5k revs, narrow windy roads grrrrrrgrrrrrgrrrrrrgrrrrr

That's the runt of the family. If it was a Polo it'd be a 1L, a Civic it'd be a 1.3 DX, a Corolla it'd have windey windows. If it was a BMW it'd be a 316. And the mileage is high.

I'd say €250, only if it has an NCT.

Unless insurance is a factor, which is why I bought my 1.6 156 over a 1.8 or 2.0. Not exactly an animal, but still a fun car to drive.

the 1.6 was added after the main design was done and is somewhat underpowed (imho) - was it a somewhat mad attempt to make it appeal to company car class ?

The 1.8/2.0 had better handling characteristics than the nose heavy, torque steer v6 versions and the ridilicous GTA versions...

To put things a little bit into perspective, the 1.6l 156 had 120BHP. The 1.8l had 144BHP. A BMW 316 of that era was actually a 1.9l with only 105BHP

All of those cars are good drivers car. Some are a little bit more underpowered than others.

I sold a 1998 one owner 156 2.0 Lusso for €800 a couple of weeks ago, it had over 130,000 miles but it did have a fully documented service history from new.

Post the details on the Irish section of Alfaowner, you may get some interest. There was a fella looking for a 'cheap' 156 a few weeks ago, but he's since bought a 166. As others have said, this car is not worth a lot at this stage, irrespective of how much you paid for it.

Only if it is falling apart. The 17" alloys would nearly fetch that on their own.

Well, my point is that the smallest engine in a range will always be popular in Ireland, at least until the tax by CC is phased out. It might be for insurance reasons or because people equate running costs with engine size, even though a smaller engine is often a false economy.

I chose the 1.6 because insurance was a lot more expensive for young males 6 years ago than it is now, and moving up to a 1.8 would have been considerably more expensive. I also didn't feel that it was that under-powered.
