advice on updating firmware on a jailbroken 3gs iphone

    thanks in advance for any advice on this.

    1. how do i upgrade the firmware from 3.0 to 3.12
    2. can i do it without losing current apps and settings ?
    3. if it does reset and lose current apps, will it also lose contacts and texts and photos etc ?

    apologies if this has been covered in a thread already.

    My understanding is that if you upgrade to 3.1.2 it will undo your jailbreak & you will not be able to jailbreak again.

    Can you sync iPhone to iTunes first...? You will need to jailbreak again after update to 3.12

    Not true at all. It will undo the jailbreak ya but you can just redo it.

    I would stay on 3.0 if i were you.

    Both myself and my mate are on 3.1.2 jailbroken and unlocked but ours were on 3.1 out of the box so we had to use the new blackrain jailbreak option.

    This is currently the only option you have for jailbreak on 3.1.2.

    Phone works fine but there is a problem with both of our wifi settings.

    If you turn the phone off at any point you loose all your wireless network settings and codes you put in to access them. They can be restored by going to restore network settings in options but it really is a pain in the arse having to do this every time, and also not being able to turn the phone off.

    Stay with 3.0 if you have no problems with it why make problems for yourself!

    Stay with 3.0 ,3.1 will give better battery life but I didn't bother, if u have your set on 3.1 then follow this:

    You will have to update your phone (officially) to firmware 3.1.2 via iTunes , BUT before you do that you will have to backup your current Apps.

    Offiical Apps:
    Any official Apps you have installed wont be a problem , they will re-sync the next time via iTunes .

    Cydia Apps:
    All your Cydia Apps will need to be backed up ...
    Search "aptbackup" in Cydia .
    Install it.
    Open it at press "BACKUP"
    Done.
    What this does is takes a list of all your Cydia Apps (**it does not copy them) .
    When you want them back (after re-jailbreak) you simply follow the above Instructions again but hit "RESTORE"
    **all settings will need to be re-entered as it copies back the App not settings etc.

    Cracked Apps:
    You (I) cannot talk about cracked apps here .

    Now that you have all your apps backed up its time to jailbreak ...

    Go to Blackra1n.com
    Select your operating system (Windows or Mac )
    Download to your desktop .
    Plug your phone into your P.C (If iTunes opens , close it)
    Double click on the "blackra1n.exe" on your desktop .
    Click "make it rain"
    Follow the instructions
    10 secs later ..your jaibroken.

    On your phone you will see a "blackra1n" App .
    Open it .
    Install Cydia or whatever you prefer .
    You will also see "blacksnow"..This is the sim unlock feature so u can use the phone on a different network, install it if required.
    Go back into Cydia and get your "aptbackup" and reinstall your Cydia Apps.

    Go back to blackrain.com AND DONATE !
