The new MPG's from alot of car manufacturers are unbelievable compared to just a few years ago! How much further can they go, just purely on pertrol and diesel engines, in getting more and more bhp for less and less fuel per mpg?

That is a good question and you would think they have to be getting close to the limit. Of course, at least here in the states, MPG ratings are usually pretty inflated and you can often take 10mpg off of what the manufacturer or even the highway system reports...

I have rented cars and driven them in the states several times including a few months ago, could you imagine every car switched to a manual diesel over there, the possible billions and billions in fuel savings and reduction in pollution and drop in oil prices which affects everything we buy ie clothes, food, air travel etc that would occur? why are there so few if any diesel cars in the states?

It would be the opposite, and lead to an increase in air pollution. Indeed this is the reason why some states ban diesel cars that would be permitted in Europe, where standards are lower.

Some states such as California, New York etc. had a blanket ban on all diesel cars from 1981 to 2007.

Diesel cars, though more fuel efficient pollute more, and have a more significant effect on air quality (due to the size of the diesel exhaust pariclute), drastically increasing smog.

Some modern diesels which have particle filters are allowed for use in 48 of the 50 states, and some of the even cleaner ones are allowed in California.

Since diesel cars were effectively banned for so long, the market is very slow to react to them, and up untl recently diesel was actually hard to find in California petrol stations.

Ironically, the rule did not apply to pickup trucks.
