    Hi,

I bought this game without realising that it portrays Christianity in a very negative light. I played and greatly enjoyed Assassins Creed 1 (which I felt was reasonably balanced) but began to suspect that the sequel was specifically attacking the Catholic church as I played through so I did some research before investing more time.

Generally I don't like to research big budget games too much for fear of ruining the plot for myself but I did and discovered that my concerns were more than warranted.

I feel that this element of the game needs to be highlighted clearly.

In what way does it attack the Catholic church?

(I might go out and buy it;))

Fantastic game so I'd recommend not reading the spoiler as it may detract from your experience but if you must know:
You have to assasinate the Pope. It also pretty much denounces all man-kind invisioned gods
    .

Its only a piece of fiction, and is stated at such at the start, so I dont see any need to get upset about it.

    You have to
    assassinate the Pope
?:eek:. Now I understand where the poster was coming from. That is offensive.
Its next to impossible not to read spoilers.

Yes but in the context of the story there is a reasoning behind it and its not done for any religious motivation. Anyways:
It's Pope Alexander VI, didnt he appear in hell in Dantes Inferno? Regardless, history has recorded him as being quite the dubious character so I really have no problem assassinating him in a game.

There is a game coming out based on Dantes Inferno.

Anyway, sure I can see how this may offend Christians. But bear in mind there are people who are offended by certain passages of the Bible also. So...there you go.

In the context of medieval Italy, its historically spot on, however.

It's not meant to be offensive though. Everytime you turn on the game you get a little notice saying that the game was made by people with various cultures, religions and beliefs.

but began to suspect that the sequel was specifically attacking the Catholic church as I played through so I did some research before investing more time.

    I'd suggest you read this
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Borgia
and follow through on the various links therein. Medieval catholicism was not some fairy story. I'd be suprised if any content in the game was as rough as the reality. There were some 8 instances of that spoiler, I think.

Saying that a simulation based in part on history is "specifically attacking the Catholic church" strikes me as a rather strange attitude to hold.

I'm sure Catholics have heard of the Reformation.

Ok...multiple spoilers but I think they'll show how the game Isn't Attacking Christianity.
It's part of a trilogy.Knights of Templar are portrayed as the baddies
Pope assassination is completely justified as he weaved himself slyly into become pope - in short he's behind an entire conspiracy of EVIL.
2012 Prophecy is going to be fulfilled by a Solar Flare or something.

So one gets to beat the crap out of the Pope who happened to be Rodrigo Borgia arguably the most debauched and corrupt of all popes. What's the big deal?!

I hope they come up with a game where one gets to beat up or at least badly shake up Pope Pius XII for his weak stance against the Nazis and Italian fascists during WW-II

Out of interest, do you think the game should have been modified to be less offensive?

I dont see how anyone could be offended by this, its a magnificent recreation of 15th century Italy and the story is historically accurate with some liberties taken, i'm sure the Daily Mail will find something about it to latch onto though

Yeah...... why is this offensive exactly? What about the 100's of other people you kill working your way in the game?

Doesn't the bible denounce all killing?
So why is the pope the only killing in the game you care about?

No. Not at all. People who are apt to take offense easily would do well to stay away from video games.

    SPOILER!!!
and you don't even end up killing the douchebag (even though that's initially the assassin's assignment) just beating the living daylights out of him :)

    If
    killing the Pope
    is offensive to
    Catholics
    then what about the
poisnoning of Pope John Paul I
    ? Wasn't that an
    inside job
    ?

EDIT: "Why Monsieur, with all these
    Spoilers
    you're really
    spoiling
    us." :pac:

I don't really see how it could be deemed offensive. You do
have to assassinate the pope, but it's because he's the head of the Templars, who're hell bent on enslaving humanity. Interestingly, in the first game, they're portrayed as an atheist group aiming abolish religion entirely.

I never thought I'd see an AC2 thread in this forum. :pac:

It seems the new Tomb Raider game pulls the same trick.

Hard to get details at this point but it looks like the main end game villain is a priest.

Let me see, a game where the object is to go around ASSASSINATING people is offensive to a a Christian because it portrays Christianity in a negative light?

    Hmmmm.......
