    1st i've seen of this,

£440 for a 16gig pre pay iphone from o2 uk,

    £15 to unlock,

This equates to 500 euro for a brand spanking new unlocked iphone,

this has gotta be the best option around so far???

    Probally!

I wonder if they only unlock iPhones tied to iPhone o2 Sim cards? the ones that give you the free internet/wifi, or could you use a normal o2 sim card?

I have a o2 UK iPhone, but i have a standard o2 sim card i bought by itself, think i'd get the unlock?

I would think so, are you registered with o2 uk?

O2 will only unlock PAYG Iphones after 12 months. Contract Iphones they unlock straight away.

    iPhone Pay & Go customers

Yes, you can unlock your iPhone for a one-off cost of £14.69. You'll pay for this from the money topped-up on your phone.

But if you unlock your iPhone less than 12 months after you bought it, we'll take off the free Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On (that we added for the first 12 months). You can buy a Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On for £10 a month when you fill in the unlocking form. Find out more about the Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On here.

Phoned an O2 Store in Belfast and they said they never heard of this option?

The guy said it would be some deal if its true!

Anyone bought a phone from them unlocked?

I was in Newry durin the week and popped into a shop to query how long you would have to spend with o2,

He said since o2 lost exclusive rights to the iphone once you buy it and activate it they will unlock it, for a £15 fee.

So do you have to use it much before they will unlock the phone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,379 ✭✭✭✭SteelyDanJalapeno

no it can be done after a few calls are made, top it up with £20 and make a few calls,

needs to be at least £14.69 credit in the phone as this is how they charge you to unlock it,

    see here

    http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/unlockmyiphone.html

there another link in that link to a form for filling it out,

after you request the code it can take up to 14 days though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,379 ✭✭✭✭SteelyDanJalapeno

so would this then equate to a factory unlocked iPhone?
can you upgrade on itunes as normal and so on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,379 ✭✭✭✭SteelyDanJalapeno

Yes, I'm pretty sure it does,

you can definitly update it on itunes etc.

My experience today indicates DubDani is correct

Having read this thread I travelled north to Newry today with the aim of buying a 16gb 3GS and getting it unlocked legitimately at the o2 store up there.

When I got there and asked, the guys in the shop hadn't heard of o2 offering this unlocking service for 15 quid at all and told me that they could no way unlock it for me instore. Having half expected this response, I pressed the guy and got him to look up the weblink cited previously in this thread. The webpage says the following RE PAYG iphones:

"Yes, you can unlock your iPhone for a one-off cost of £14.69.

Find out more about the Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On here."

Having read this the guy rang up o2 customer services who, after a long wait, told him that o2 won't unlock PAYG iphones unless you've had the phone on o2 UK for 12 months. He told me I could go elsewhere and get a 3rd party to unlock the phone for me but that this would void my warranty. Accordingly (and to my disappointment) I travelled back south sans-iphone.

My problem is that the website says nothing about the condition that you have to have used your PAYG iphone for 12 months on o2 UK. All it says is that you would lose the free Web & Wi-fi bolt-on if you unlock in less than 12 months. But given that I'd be transferring to a ROI network that makes no odds.

So can anyone tell me for certain, is the guy in the shop right and the website just unclear? or is the guy in the shop misinformed?

    Cheers

My UK iPhone was unlocked via that website, took only a few days aswell.

I had the UK sim card for about a week, made a few phone calls on it, and then requested the unlock, and it just came through today:)

So the guy was full of $hite so? Did you just buy the handset yourself then take it home and do the unlocking on that webpage yourself?

Are you using it in the ROI now?

"we'll take off the free Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On"

From a quick google that doesn't amke any difference if brought over here?

If o2 unlocks it this is the same as a factory unlock?

Been holding back holding back and I might just get it now :)

Well there are codes for 10% discount when you order online. If it's possible to order online from o2 uk and have it delivered it works out at about 450euro for the 16gb version. Then when you have your credit on the phone the first day you can use the unlock code website and you'll have a completely unlocked iPhone with having to worry about unlocking and all jailbreaking everytime there's an update

    guys,

i'm not sure if you read my post above but an o2 shop official in newry and the o2 uk customer service dept (who he contacted to ask at my insistance) said that this unlocking service is only available to people who have had their PAYG iphone on o2 uk for at least 12 months

they said the part about losing the wifi bolt-on relates to if you own a uk PAYG iphone and decide to jailbreak it yourself or get it unlocked by a 3rd party.

they were quite firm with me that o2 would under no circumstances unlock one of their PAYG iphone unless it had been on the network for at least a year, and if you decide to jailbreak or unlock it on your own accord, the warranty is void.

i'm very confused. o2 employees telling me one thing yet the website seems to tell a completely different story.

any way of finding out whether this definitely works or not for a new PAYG iphone? cos im still skeptical!

I'm afraid I don't have one handy. Just do a google search on google.co.uk, for o2 discount codes and click the uk sites only option. It'll be in the first couple of sites.

Does anyone know a way of being able to order from the uk site?

Also it is confirmed that you can unlock the phone as soon as you get it once it's a uk number

Sounds like the customer service people are getting confused with the 12 month deal for bolt/wifi add on.

You don't need to be with them 12 months, think about it, if you where with them longer then 12 months, you would have lost the bolt/wifi add on anyway, as this only lasts 12 months. So why would they mention it on the website?

where did you get the iPhone? From o2 Ireland?
