Availing of scrappage in new year but advice needed on what to buy!

Here's the deal. My dad's planning on availing of the Government scrappage in January/Feb but isn't sure what to buy. Essentially the biggest selling point for him is value for money, he's definitely not a Brand/Label head if that makes sense! So given that and the fact that he'd like a comfortable and reliable 4 door (or 5 door hatch) what are his options and what would you guys recommend? (remember it has to fall within the A or B tax band to be eligible for the 1500 scrappage). I should also point out that he wants a petrol although I've tried (unsuccessfully!) to persuade him to make the change to diesel!

Anyway thanks in advance and let the suggestions begin!

Both over rated cars, and offer no value for money whatsoever.

If he wants value for money, look at the 1.6TDi Octavia Ambiente or Elegance. A good bit of spec, for a good price.

Also look at the new Astra - 2.0CDTi 160 SC is relatively goof value, although I'm not sure what band that engine falls in.

Kia Rio petrol great value and really what a "toyota corrola" should be if cars didn't get bigger every model change. Five year warranty i think

He'll have a very limited choice if he wants a petrol car in band A/B, especially if he wants a saloon.

Yeah, but the days of needing to put a 1.4 in an Astra or a 1.6 in a Vectra to give you lower tax are gone - your suggestion of a 1.6 or 2.0 diesel in a similarly sized car will give a far better car to drive.

I'm not saying that he won't get some cars in petrol, I just feel he'll have a larger choice of better cars if he can get over that hump.

Just get him to drive a diesel car.

Not really. Golfs are 2 a penny and percentage wise you wont get any more back for them than a like for like car from another brand ( excluding sh!t-boxes from Korea etc. ) Anyway VW ended up giving the last generation of Golfs away for about 15 grand in the middle of last year because they couldnt shift them, Fact. The new Corolla isnt over rated at all, infact I think its fair to say that its rated exactly where it should be , a poor car. The Auris doesnt sell at all in any market. I'd have to agree with the other poster here who suggested the new 1.6 Octavia diesel. Cheaper than a Golf, better built than a Golf and every bit the re sale of a Gold relative to its new cost. Dont forget a new Megane Coupe diesel or petrol which can be bought from about 16 grand with all the scrappage incentives attached to it.

As a person who looks at the value of cars every day of the week, a Golf commands maybe 250-500 more than a similar Octavia/Focus/Astra. But they are more expensive to buy at the front end, so it makes no odds.

The Corolla is just a horrible car. I wouldnt recommend them to anyone.
