I'm 19 and will turn 20 on the 5th of January.
I'm wondering if I apply for the dole now under the old scheme where under 19's get 100 and over 20's get 204, once I turn 20 will my dole increase to 204?
Also, I went into the dole office today and have an appointment on Monday but I doubt my application will be complete by January 1st, at what point has my application begun. I mean, if I've started the application but it isnt complete by January 1st will I be considered under the old scheme or the new scheme.
    Thanks for your help!

I don't know the exact answer, but it is always better to go to them sooner rather than later.

You will be paid any amount you are due while waiting, but I don't know what rate your will get next year.

Your claim will be will be valid from the date you make your claim, so if you have an appointment for Monday, the start date of your claim will be today, the day you first presented yourself at the SW office. The claim may not be authorised until the new year, but all you will be awarded as and from today.

But the bad news is that currently those under 20 are only entitled to €100 per week, (that is if you are going for the means tested JA payment), if you have applied for JB, based on your PRSI contributions you would get the full rate of payment - €204.30 at today's rate ( due to drop to €196 in January)

Your claim starts today so when you receive your first payment it will be back dated to today. If you have worked up enough prsi credits you will get the full amount when you turn 20 which has been reduced to €196.
The prsi credits depend on how long you have been employed and the rate of pay as well.
Best bet is to ask at the app on monday though..

Well I worked about 20 hours a week for 6 months and then I worked full time for a year. How would I be set for job seekers benefit?

As far as I know for Jobseekers Benefit you have to have 2 years contributions, but you may qualify for Job seekers allowance. Job seekers allowance is means tested I think, so it depends on household income.
