The year is 2000. Boom time fever has caught you in its grip. You've worked hard for years , the kids are a little older and all of a sudden you have lots of extra wonga in the pocket. Its time to shed your self of the 1989 Carina 2 and treat yourself to something with a badge ...what will it be.

    Lexus or the Pug.

At the time without knowing about it's issues, I'd have gone for the Alfa.

It has to be the lexus, although the pug is tempting...

Lex was one of the more notable cars of the time but i did have a soft spot for the Alfa with-the-number-plate-off-to-the-side.

I would vote Lexus, but it's probably alot more expensive than the Passat.

    If price isn't a factor, then I'll take a super car :D

Alfa 156 - would be the nicest driver with the most go of that lot.

Picked the Lexus, but it was a close choice between that and the 156 :D

It was at the time alright. Huge boot, more extras than you could shake a stick at.......HAD to have the boot spoiler though, just didn't look the same without.

find it hard to believe that a 1.8 4 cyl FWD alfa would have 'more go' and 'drive nicer' than purring 2.0 6cyl RWD lexus??

Although back then I was quite impressed by the alfas design.. In retrospect it hasn't aged nearly as well as the lexus

    You'd better believe it :D

The Lexus has only slightly more power but is much heavier than the Alfa. And the only reason the Lexus has RWD is because the c-class and the 3-series have RWD

Anyway, unfair comparison lining up the Lexus and only the 316. The 320 would have been similar price as the Lexus and it would have gotten my vote :)

Not sure why, but have a feeling I would have gone for the audi, complete with the Paddy spec 1.6 engine!

Lovely car but totally underpowered. I test drove the 1.6 after the 2 ltr the difference in power is very noticeable. There a fairly heavy car. Same goes for the bmw.

My sentiments exactly. The 320 would have gotten my vote too, but I went for the Lexus over the Alfa seeing as the beemer wasn't there

    Yeah,we get it.

    You like Honda.

I probably would of bought the Lexus if I could afford it.
Its aged the best out of all those cars IMO (along with the Alfa)

Sorry there dude but the comment has been there since 14:53. With all due respect it should have been acted upon earlier to avoid exactly what we're talking about now.

I'd save a few bob and be hurtling along in the lesser spotted Skoda Octavia TDi in bells and whistles (at the time) SLX trim.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,971 ✭✭✭teednab-el

The audi is a smashing car but not that 1.6 underpowered engine, It would have to be a 2.0T, 1.8T or 1.9 TDI before I would look at it. I wouldnt touch the Alfa at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,175 ✭✭✭Top Dog

Why are all the options poxy paddy-spec engines?

If those were my choices I wouldn't buy any of them - I'd buy something on a '98 plate with a reasonable engine.
