I am getting a touchscreen phone and am interested in getting a stylus

I have a general assumption that a stylus is just a pen and that brands dont matter for it to work etc....is that correct?

It depends on the type of screen. With a resistive screen anything will work as a stylus, and most phones with this screen would come with one.
For a capacitive screen you are supposed to use your fingers but there are special styluses (stylii?) that you can get. Its very unlikely that this woiuld come with the phone
