Anyone ever transplant a Range Rover TDV8 into a classic Merc or BMW? I'm being tempted by Merc 450 SE at the moment but at 15-19mpg it is a complete turn-off :0(

Its a new engine, wouldn't that be hugely expensive? Great engine though I have a TDV8 myself

Saw one here on eBay for about £2.5K: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250404139171&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Just an idea, wondered if anyone had attempted it!

I'm amazed, its great value makes me feel ripped off with what I spent on my Range Rover. They are a great engine as I said so good luck in getting it installed.

the idea of a TD sounds tempting, but its a shoddy american lump, molested by British leyland, brought somewhat upto date by rover.

Stick with bmw/merc engines, their expensive for a reason.

if you were to put a diesel engine into a petrol car, you'd have to swap the fuel tank and all the fuel lines along with it, which is a huge amount of hassle in itself. Pair that to the fact that there are no off the shelf parts to mount the engine in the car and that custom ones will have to be fabricated, along with the fact that you'll have to come up with a way of managing the engine, probably a standalone ecu. You can see it could turn out to be a very pricey procedure. If you really want to do it i'd say you'd better put about 10k aside to spend on getting everything in and running right

The money that you'll save on fuel will have been spent in the process of the changeover :pac:

Ditto - just buy the car , park it, polish it, and drive it when you like. If you were doing a Dundalk to Dublin commute every day then fuel costs might be a consideration, but doing massive engine swops are a huge drain on money with no guarantees of satisfaction !

I will in my arse ;0) I have a E34 525TDS Touring, that is as new as I will go (love the old shape Bimmers); this is the family car, I'm looking for something a bit different for the second one.

Definitely not going to do an engine transplant, was curious, and thanks for all the feedback people :0)
