Space to teach art classes...

I've recently been looking for a suitable place to give art classes a few times a week to small groups.

It's becoming apparent that it's actually going to be hard to find a space in central Dublin to do this that won't cost a fortune and that is a place that I alone will be using.

I'm planning on moving apartment in the new year so I've been thinking about finding a place that would be big enough to live and which would also have a seperate area to teach small classes.

Obviously the area I move to and the condition of the apartment/house I move into will be a big factor in how many people I can attract to these classes.

Can I get some opinions on whether or not people here think this is a viable option?
Do you think people would be comfortable coming to a place that doubles up as a person's home as long as the space there is presented in a professional manner? Or would it be a complete turn off?

    Thanks
    -Paul

Complete turnoff unless it is primarily a studio/ gallery ie your straight into it as soon as you walk threw the door and the fact that it is a residence is hidden , to be honest we need more details to give a proper opinion like when you say moving is it just you or you and 15 kids ??? What type of classes ?? When you said that town was too expensive how much was it and what space where you getting for the money ??

There is also the other option of you going to peoples houses , I know my grand mother and 2 friends have a weekly class where they all chip in to cover the cost of the instructor for the 2-3 hours

    Hi crotalus.

If the building/space I attain is also one that I live in I'd obviously make sure that the training/studio area would be the first thing students see and would be completely segregated from the rest of my home.
I'd say finding a place that I could do something like that though would be fairly difficult/expensive.

As to the details you wanted...
I'd be living alone. No kids.
The type of art classes I would be doing would be aimed at adults. I'll be teaching how to achieve realism in both drawing and painting. Approx. 5-6 students per class. I'd be aiming to do about 4 classes a week, each lasting 2-3 hours.

The space I'd be looking for would just have to have a decent amount of natural light in it and for it to be warm. Nothing too fancy. Nothing too cramped.

My maximum budget I'd have for this space would be €500 per month (obviously more if it was somewhere I could live also).

The space doesn't have to be right in the city centre. A nice area close to the city centre such as Rathmines would also be acceptable.

Maybe it would be hard to find , maybe not , the front rooms on one of the big old houses in town would make a perfect space , lots of natural light from those big windows plus the atmosphere form architecture could make a pretty nice studio , as for price it depends where the house is , what condition it’s in and how much of it you are renting , all you really need is the first floor (enough room for a studio living area/kitchen and bedroom) I’m sure there are a few places where the rent is cheap because the landlord cant afford to do up the property to a high standard (if your going to be using one room as a studio you want a landlord that is willing to let you get a bit messy as long as you splash a coat of pait on the walls before you leave)

Excellent so there is no prob's with you sticking a sign out side saying there is an artists studio inside (it will make all the difference

My mother takes a class each week in a rented room of a school (oil painting ) about 10 people it lasts about two hours forty five minutes (15 minutes of which is a tea break ) I’d say 6 -8 is a minimum if you are doing it commercially (of course this is all depending on how much your charging )

My maximum budget I'd have for this space would be €500 per month (obviously more if it was somewhere I could live also)
You wont get anywhere decent that you have permanently to yourself for 500 your best bet is to go with living in the building you are working in , to give you an idea a small shop in Rush (about 30-40 mins from Dublin ) is about 15,000 per year , that’s before utilities commercial water rates ect, working from home would help you avoid the extra expense associated with a commercial premises ,

You will also have to consider insurance ,

Talk to a few of the estate agents in your area give them your budget and tell them what you are looking for and how flexible you can be , also keep parking in mind it makes a big difference if your clients have to pay out an extra tenner for parking each time

    hi there

You could also try looking for a place to share with someone. I for one would love to do the same with English classes, but I've never even looked into rent on a place, I don't imagine I could afford it. However, if you could share with someone, work times around eachother, that might work.
