Beware of Icy Roads 2009-12-18

Icey in D15 this morning. Couldn't use the cyclelanes as they were all civered with snow and ice from last night's rain. I was on the road all the time which caused me a few honks ( these ones were not complimenting my backside .. not that they ever do anyway ) from cars, to which I responded very politely with a wave... as you do.

So: D15 > use the roads.

I've noticed that D15 is that bit higher and seems to catch the frost/ice a bit more than other parts of Dublin.

You think they would just give you a break. You're just trying to get to work like everyone else.

Whats the point of these threads?

Hands up if people wake up and think "I wonder if it is icey outside this morning, I know what I'll do I won't just look out the window I'll check boards.ie"

Thanks for the info, roads are quite bad around Lucan and Strawberry beds as well.

I think that kind of specific heads up would be pretty useful if I were cycling from a warm and ice-free city-centre microclimate to frigid and icy D15.

    Bit grumpy today tunney?

Tunney, generally I quite like your input, however if you are going to be patronising, don't waste your time replying.

I find it useful if I'm travelling, some areas will be icy, some not.

Normally quite hard to find cycling specific weather reports. While it's great to hear about the state of the M50 (I need to use it today), things like "bit icy for the road bike" are really useful. One guy the other day posted up a warning (ok, not weather, but same idea) about a slick patch heading into Laragh.

Some of us actually use our bikes on the road and not in a shed (oh yes, I went there :))

I commute to work, I've ridden in snow, I've ridden in -7 degrees around Wicklow and over Sally gap, I've ridden on ice, slush, whatever. Yes at the moment I'm no allowed cycle outside but thats unrelated to cycling, just can't go far from home.

What difference would it make if I'd read a post "a bit icey around Blessington" - absolutely none. If you are dependent on posts from randomers to make you aware of the conditions you are riding in then in all honesty you probably should be the one riding in a shed the whole time.

Oh God. So what part of the thread title made you think "maybe I need to click this?". If you are the Bear Grylls of the cycling world, why bother? Or was it just to put people down and bask in your own smugness?

No was just idle curiousity - had I known that people would react so badly to a query about what benefit these threads have I'd not have bothered asking. I was simply curious as to whether reading a post about "ice in D3" made people more aware of their surroundings and if these same people can't see the ice/leaves/oil spills in front of them as they are riding. I really do struggle to see the benefit of the posts. I've seen this type of post for a few years on here and have never asked. Now I have and regret it.

Now GPS locations of patches of ice that can be loaded into garmins automatically - yes I see the benefit of this. Vague comments - "Ice in Dublin on the roads" - not so much.

And the point of listing conditions I've ridden in was to somewhat defend myself from the assumptions that I only ride indoors on turbos and rollers.

I have read your blog, I'm not an idiot and know you ride on the road, thus the smiley face.

Maybe it was the tone of the query? Is it not easier to say what you just said in the previous post rather than a more sarcastic "what is the point...hands up..."?

    Just a thought.

Oh, you should come along to the beers later on, then we wouldn't really be total randomers anymore.

Tone was meant as inquisitive but nothing more. Apologies if it came across as otherwise. I really am curious if people ride differently based on the posts or if they'd ride according to the conditions regardless.

Will check out the time for the beers and see - I'm on a short leash these days though :)

Also dont see the point of the thread

My Question is why would you ride in to town(assumming thats where u are going) on such a day when there is a pretty decent(compared to other areas of Dublin) train/Bus service from D15 ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,400 ✭✭✭Caroline_ie

Will you fecking stop that. As I said, you don't see the point of the thread then, don't waste your time replying to it and leave it those who find it useful.

There are plenty of things I find stupid, but do I go spoiling people's threads pointing out how fecking stupid they are?

I don't see the point in this thread anymore - please lumen lock it. I am tired of this sh!t.

Also don't see the point of the thread

There are people who commute from the inner city slums (where it's completely clear) to the muted decadence of D15 (where it's quite slippy). I can see how such people might appreciate the heads up, particularly if they have a choice of bikes or other transport options.

    Also, snow is exciting.

Caroline: fair enough, but it is Friday :)
