TV Shows where location scenes were shot on 'Film'

Just a bit of retro TV thinking.... Anyone remember the shows where the outdoor or location scenes were shot on 16mm, and then back to video/TV camera for interior scenes. I never understood it as a kid... think Fawlty Towers used to do it...
