Ok, i have a friend who is having trouble with her project work. She has several tape recordings that she needs to get to mp3 format so that she can send them to me. Iv told her about software she will need and to buy a male to male 3.5 mm jack cable. But now she tells me that her mac doesnt have a 3.5mm microphone input. She is really stressing out. I think some macs have external mic input as a usb type socket?? im not sure?

Anyway does anyone have any advice i can give her. She is abroad so i cant exactly go and help myself and im stuck. I need expert help
    Thanks lads...

Depending on the model of Mac she has, the audio out may also be the audio in.

Get her to confirm the type of Mac that she has - laptop, desktop, colour, details from "About this Mac, etc, and it can be confirmed on www.lowendmac.com or similar.

If she wants to stream audio into her Mac she may be best to get hold of a USB sound card if quality is essential to the mp3 files. This will stream the audio from the audio source (her tape player in this case) into the Mac in a more balanced manner and is more likely to avoid any distortion than feeding it via a mini jack. On whatever audio programme she is using to convert the audio in, it will be a simple matter of selecting the audio source to the USB sound card.

Somebody here will correct me if I am wrong but Garageband may well be able to record the audio in; this may mean she won't have to download 3rd party software.

Thanks for the help lads. She was able to connect it using a different cable that someone gave her. We aren't worried to much about sound quality as it is just a recorded interview and clarity isn't essential. We just have to be able to hear the words. I'll keep in mind the adive about the sound card for future reference though.
