Ok so its been a long time since i watched WWE proper more then a year i lost interest work stopped me from watching Raw so on.

I have just heard bret Hart is return maybe for mania something i have wanted to see for years. How should i go about trying to some what catch up on what has being going on the past year in the wwe ??

I mean from looking at there website the odd time the standard and overall entertainment seems to have gone quite dry.

I mean i watched wrestling when was a kid and then start again in my teens i watched everything went to events in Dublin bought all the computer games i was a big fan. Kinda thinking now i could try get back into watching it again from the point of view from WWE fans is it worth it?
I mean is the standard of matchs good ?? Is there still an amazing buzz when huge things happen ? Do they even still happen? Am i wasting my time making a come back?

im sure people here will not mind reminding you aout what went down in the WWE in 2009 afterall tis the end of the year now and a good time to look back. You did pick a good time to start watching again also as at Christmass you will get the review best or Raw/SD shows and then the road to WrestleMania starts with the Rumble which is when the WWE traditionally kick it up a notch (as mentioned Bret could be back).

What time is raw on at these days still 2am?

Do you still pay 20 something euro for half of the ppvs ?

Just remembered there that Royal Rumble is the next ppv which i always loved i am thinking strongly of gettin into the whole thing again from what i have seen of 2009 on wwe.com there seem to be no huge stand out moments like some years am i right or wrong? Was it a bad year like?

SD was amazing for a few months this summer with Jeff, Edge, Rey, Jericho and Punk dominating the main event scene. Then Jeff left, Rey got suspended, Edge got injured and Taker and Dave came back and it has lost its way since then. The feud between Punk and Jeff was superb stuff though, Punks straight edge heel character was a perfect foil for Jeff.

Raw had its moments some of the guest hosts were great. e.g Dusty, Ted SNR, Ventura, Bob Barker and Shaq most were pretty bad though. Cena, Hunter and Orton dominated the show but Jericho/Show and even Sheamus were featured quite prominently as the year ended. Miz and Kofi got mini pushes as well, Bourne jobbed, Masters returned and did little and the great white hope Swagger toiled and spent most of his time on Superstars as the year ended.

MVP and Henry formed a mildy over tag team although logic suggests that MVP was better as a heel.

ECW was raped and pillaged every draft but Christian was its star and constantly put on good matches with Swagger, Ryder, Yoshi and Regal.
Diva wise, Gail Kim and Mickie were terrible, Maryse was sexy but useless in the ring, Beth and Natalya were solid while to everyones shock Mc Cool turned into a very capable worker.

PPV wise the E was good, Backlash onwards they normally delivered.

    Thanks man!!

So from the looks of things the raw and smackdown end of year shows should have no problem helping me get on the road to catch up? As it really does not sound like anything huge happened this year.

Pretty much. Jeff leaving was the biggest moment for many but that should be covered in those shows.

Same here. Is it still very kiddish? I mean it just seems squarely aimed at kids these days. I saw DX there one day and they werent the dx I remembered back in the 90s. But this dx were covered in bright green gimicky merchandise and telling stupid jokes. One big advertisement.

Theres no blood anymore either (I know this might be stupid but I used to love when theyd start bleeding it would really add to the match). No chair shots cracking over the head anymore either.

I dont know everything from Cena to the overall kid feel to it, I just think its absolute **** (coming from someone who used to love it just before WCW invasion.

But hearing theres an Irish fella champion and most importantly Bret Hart coming back I am definitely interested again.

Bet if you watch the dx of the 90's you will cringe with embarresment. I bough the dvd and watched about 10 mins. WWE in my opinion has always had a kids feel to it. Yeah it went a bit smutty for a few years but it had to adapt for survival.

I dont see losing the blood and headshots with chairs making it more kid friendly. More like corporate friendly. Wrestlers covered in blood going through crowds of people is not going to be looked on kindly. I think the headshots came to an end because of the Benoit tradgedy. You cant fault the wwe for not wanting a repeat of this.

The biggest fault of wwe now is profit comes before product. You can say that about most things i used to enjoy.

It is a tad kiddish, they have aimed it a fair bit at kids, for example, John Cena with the FU and STFU changing to the Attitude Adjustment and STF. But I still find it enjoyable, me and one of my friends watch the PPVs every month, and some of them are pretty good, with enjoyable matches

Thats because it is squarley aimed at kids these days.

If I was being honest, I'd say overall, both WWE and TNA are not worth your time. They're childrens shows, with terribly-written skits, poor acting and non-engaging characters. Sure there's better ones, but on a whole, wrestling isn't that interesting -- it's only because I love wrestling so much that I keep watching. I don't see how anyone older than 15 could start (or re-start) watching either WWE or TNA because the shows just aren't that good. I couldn't really justify spending 22 euro on a PPV every other month. Wrestling is in general, in a bit of a slump. There's nothing amazingly awesome like back in the 80s or in the Attitude Era.

However I'd recommend watching both RAW and iMPACT in the first week of January (Jan 4th) because since both are going head to head, they'll try much harder to put on a great show.

Really? Twins cavorting in swimming pools? Maryse talking about gobbles? What would a kid see in this?

The folk moaning about kids wwe are the same folk who watched it every week 10 years ago when they were kids themselves.

Did anyones parents buy the Stone Cold or Rock dvd sets that came out?

Wrestling, well wwe, has always had a revolving door set of fans. As you get older you move on. As you move on more kids take your place. For a few years the risky show and being the media darling kept wrestling popular for the 18-35 demograph. As expected the popularity dwindled so wwe has went into self preservation mode.

That's true, davrho. Let's hope they don't alienate themselves too much or we'll get another "New Generation" period! To be fair, I think WWE is so big that if it did the same thing year in year out, they'd still make huge profits (thanks to the revolving children-fans system) ....hey! That's what they've been doing for about 4 years now... We can't really hope for WWE to kick itself up the ass when they're making huge profits (still about $50,000,000 per year) so it's why I ask everyone to at least give TNA a try, for competitions' sake :)

I cant comment on that because I didnt see it.

I think its always been for kids even when it wasnt aimed at kids (Attitude Era) it was mainly around 10-15 year olds who watched it. I rember back in the day everyone in school was telling each other to "suck it".

I'm not moaning about it being for kids. I'm very accecptable of the fact that it is for kids & my time for watching it has passed.

What I will moan about is how much better it was when I was a kid. We all know it was better back in the late 80's & late 90's. Theres no point in trying to cover that up.

The confluence of talent in the late 80s will never be equalled again - mostly because at the time Vince raided the territories' best talent so even their mid-card was full of main-eventers from other promotions. Genius, really.

I have worked in Ballyfermot and Ballymun and the kids tell me to fe(u normally)ck off. Who is to blame for this? I was at school long before the attitude era and "suck it" was a school yard favorite then too?

I am not covering anything up. In 10 years time I bet the Cena fans tell you he was the best and like most childhood memories they will be romantic. Thats life.....

    Jayhunter- exactly!

Genius if you're looking at it short term.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,013 ✭✭✭✭jaykhunter

Getting it done in the first place is nothing short of genius. Closing almost every other wrestling company in America and stealing their talent and moulding "wrasslin" into a worldwide phenomenon was a masterstroke, and set him up for life. It's this initial "big bang" that changed wrestling for the rest of time, short and long term.

It's a shame he didn't leave up developmental territories so he could plunder it again. Well Vince can just rape TNA and ROH when he needs new talent.

Exactly. And because Vince looked out for his interests only, there's not the talent pool to take from, plus his developmental territory produces the same wrestler over and over again (with a few exceptions).

But these same wrestlers are what the customer pays to see over and over again. As i said the wwe has a revolving door customer base. I know they two comments contradict but you know where i am coming from.

I find the current wwe stale, boring to a point, but i can not fault McMahons business sense.

I think we can all agree that what Vince McMahon was genius, but it would've been prudent for him to leave up a developmental territory in place of the ones he ran out of business.

I think for all intents and purposes the likes of TNA and ROH are developmental territiroes for Vince.
