Wireless mouse / Sleep issue

I got an iMac recently with Snow Leopard OS. I'm new to mac and am enjoying getting used to it.
I have a wireless mouse and keyboard which is great from working on the mac from my bed but something I notice is that when I put the mac to sleep and turn off the mouse (to save battery) the computer will re-awaken since it loses connectivity and it tries to search for it.

Is there a way around this?

Also, if I turned off the mouse and wanted to put the mac to sleep with the keyboar (pressing ctrl + eject to get the options up) no button seems to work to select anything other than to turn off the mac, is there anything I can press to toggle between the options?

Turn the mouse off first and then put the Mac to sleep - by pressing the power button once.

This is what I have to do with my Logitech.

I have done that and it works a treat normally, once or twice I've had it switch back on ages after because of the signal.

But in terms of being away from the monitor and saving yourself getting up, is it a case of I'll just have to leave the mouse on all night to sacrifice my laziness or is there a way?

A general thing with OS X dialogs is that you can press the first letter of a button to select it (so in this case S should put the computer to sleep)

Also <cmd>. is generally cancel (although esc will work as well)
