Have ya ever actually taught just how far you can go online?
Like take mods admins and other web police out of the conversation is there places online where you can just say what ever you like without it being taken down?

Like i have talked bout this with me mates before there has to be ways and means of finding a place or even knowing a place where you have the total right to speak your mind no matter what it is.

Has anyone ever come across anything like this or even taught about just how far the internet could possibly go things that you dont find when searching on google or yahoo ?

Now i aint talking about child porn and or anything in same leagues as that im talking about being able to just talk like you would openly talk with family or mates. I came across a thing called freenet online one day which is *Peer-to-peer, decentralized network designed to allow the distribution of information over the Internet in an efficient manner, without fear of censorship*

Is this maybe a way around the people telling you when and how your aload to speak??

Honestly,no its not censored really.I mean if it was they could shut down every child porn website and stop people setting them up.

Although I should point out its not censored really in everywhere except China

You could go as far as a dictionary and find out that you mean "thought" not "taught" and "allowed" not "aload". There may well be a website out there where spelling is redundant. Just how will people search for it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,136 ✭✭✭✭How Soon Is Now

But when i say censored i mean nearly any website you go on has some sort of rules and most of them will nit pick and take certain parts of what you wanna say or do from your conversation.

Well, as far as I know, anything you say can be traced back to you. But whether or not it will is a different matter.

If you are that worried about being watched, nip down to your local internet cafe and post there.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Its not even the fact being watched its the fact there has to be a place where your really fully 100 percent able to speak your mind like you could if i was standing infront of you face to face.

You are free to set up such a site yourself if you feel the current ones avaliable don't offer you the freedom to speak your mind, or setup your own blogging web site.

As other pointed out, you should try 4chan.

Do the companys who supply the blogs from there sites not have rules as well though? Maybe i just looked at the most popular ones ha

Me and me best mate have taught about setting up our own site before i just tend to get side tracked by life everytime i look into it :p

Is it that simple? like if i pay for it is it as simple as sayin ok this is yours do what you want with it as long as your paying for it?

MSN (window live mail) is censored to a degree aswell, you can't (or couldn't anyway, they might have changed it) send links to certain websites, eg the pirate bay. the message just wont send.
That's very easy to overcome though

But even with family and friends there are topics that are off-limits.
Would you discuss the details your sex life with your mother for example? (Please don't say yes:eek:)

Ironically, that's why people post anonymously on the internet ...

If you using someone else blogging platform, then you would have to follow there rules.

If however, you setup your own site you can pretty much do as you like within the confines of the law and whatever limitations you hosts put on you.

The only completely uncensored network I've seen is freenet. It's slow & has limited freesites (their version of websites), but it does work.

Be warned though.....it has a lot of content that would be banned or illegal in many countries. It is however, the only place I know of where free speech truly exists.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,662 ✭✭✭RMD

4chan I suppose could be described as that but it's more pictures, memes and little chat. Avoid the /b section, it's full of retards with no morals and a folder full of some pretty sick ****.

Free speech is generally a myth on the internet. It is something that many people think exists across the web but is actually very rare.

The internet is controlled by ISP's & internet datacentres. You have to abide by their rules, and they are generally very conservative. Censorship therefore exists at the very heart of the internet.

As an example...let us say that somebody wanted to setup a web forum for peadophiles to use. Nothing illegal...no porn or anything...just chat. How many ISP's and internet datacentres would host it? Would the boards.ie admins allow a forum to be created for paedophiles to use? And would other internet users tolerate it?

You see, free speech is a great idea on paper. In reality people don't want it because it always means giving a voice to everyone who disagrees with them or their morals.

Do you want paedophiles to have a voice on the internet?
Do you want racists to have a voice on the internet?
Do you want religious nuts to have a voice on the internet?
Do you want gay hate groups to have a voice on the internet?

If you answered no to any of the above, then you are against free speech.

    /joking mode on

Boards.ie censorship is quite complex, confusing and amusing at the same time.

Although there are site-wide rules, each forum is left to create its own charter which is basically a list of things that are censored/forbidden.

The end result is the end users have to learn the 'rules' for each particular forum they use or risk being censored (or even banned). What is allowed or even encouraged in one forum, can be completely banned in another.

Somehow, it all still works though :D and boards.ie is great.

I see each forum on boards.ie as being like a different country, with its own laws and regulations. And many of those laws just happen to be shared by most/all countries. And just like in real countries, censorship is stronger in some than in others, or is more strictly enforced in some than others.

Overall boards.ie is quite an open forum and protects free speech. I'd give it a 8/10 score :p

When you mod polar opposite forums (countries) you need remember what side of the border you're on. Sometimes the natives can get pissed off

    Complete rubbish.

There are loads of resources for all those things online. Generally, ISPs don't give two hoots what you put up, and do not actively police what they have up. There are thousands of all type of dodgy websites online, and no real effort to take them down. The only thing that is cracked down on is child porn, and despite the efforts of the authorities, that still exists too.

Can you name one single type of content, or point of view that just can't be found online due to censorship?

My point is that many people who claim to support free speech are among the first to call for such sites to be closed.

When people want true free speech, they have to accept all the ugly things that go with that as well.

ISP's can't actively police their content due to the cost. However, if a complaint is made about a site that is against the ISP's conservative ToS, then it gets closed.

Try creating a peadophile chat forum on one of those free Eircom hosted 'homepages' and see how long it lasts...

Trying contacting a website hosting company and tell them you want to create a racist website and see if they say 'ok, we'll host it'.

And yes, 'dodgy' websites as you call them do exist. They face constant threat of being closed down from those who are against free speech, which is actually most people. There are very few hosts out there that will willingly host websites that go against 'public morals'.

And now, even democratic countries are getting in on the censorship deal despite claiming to support free speech which is at the core of democracy.
Australia is about to introduce a country-wide internet filter that will block all sites the government sees as 'bad', even if the sites are 100% legal. Other countries are likely to follow suit (Germany appears to be next).

To many bloody do gooders around the world tellin us what we can and cannot say or even see its crazy i mean if you really think about it there are problems out there in this country for example that are clear as daylight to anyone who aint so bloody set in there ways but because someone might get ****ing offended by me or u sayin them in public there brushed to one side.

Like there are so many things i deal with and i bet everyone else here on boards could say same thing but we cant complain or do anything about it in fear of being labled something.

This is now the case online also its bollox. Everyone should have a right to say what is on there mind if you cant deal with it or you dont like it ignore it.

Free speech doesn't work that way. You can say whatever you want in your own home, I can do the same. You can'y though come to my house and say whatever you want. I can rightly tell you to get off my premises'.

These places you are complaining about not letting you say your piece, are private premises. Boards.ie has owners that pay for it's operation. ISP also pay for their operation. They all can set any rules they like (as long as they don't conflict with the law of the country they reside in).

You want to have a place on the internet where you can go by your own rules: pay for it. If you have something that is frowned upon by hosts, you might find it hard, but search long enough and you'll find some place to host it OR pay enough to set your own rules.

This don't make the assumption that you can say whatever you want on private individual or business resources, cause that not the way it works. And thank **** for that!
