On the Luas - The Point not the O2?

So the LUAS runs to the O2 now but I noticed that on the LUAS they call it The Point.

Anyone know why this is? Are they making a point (pardon the pun) about something or is it just a mistake?

    It's still called "Point Village"

I was thinking about this too on the way the the eddie izzard gig earlier this week

The area is/or will be called The Point Village or something along those lines so it is more a reference to that I guess

i suppose O2 have invested and sponsered the 'O2' venue, and have marketed heavily to get people to call it 'the O2'. but they have nothing to do with the Luas stop.
the stop also serves The Point Village Developement.

The building in which the "O2" now resides was once a locomotive shed for steam engines as far as I can recall it was built at North Wall Point, and became known as the Point Depot. It's historic not sponsorship.

Good God OP, would you like if the LUAS had a stop called after a mobile phone company?

Those corporate sharks have paid for the naming rights of a concert venue NOT a part of Dublin City which would be a travesty. Of course they're not going to call one of the LUAS stops after a mobile phone company come on.

'the point' name is historic, not the O2 name. Link below with info on it

Thanks guys. I suspose secretly I was hoping it was a snub by LUAS to O2. :)

ClutchIt - no I don't want them to call it the O2, it's just that I'm so used to calling the venue The Point I didn't realise that the area was always called that and thought the stop name was referring to the venue.

In the US it's not unknown for metro/LRT stops to be called after an adjacent corporate sponsored entity but the reality is these contracts run out and then you're expected to rename everything.

Something a bit different is happening in Chicago:

Technically I suppose they should have called the stop "Point Village", but hey "The Point" is certainly better the "The O2".

Ouot of curiosity, when a luas arrives and 200 people are trying to cross the road, how bad does it mess up the traffic, or is there not much of a difference?

The terminus at the point is not on a street it's on the square outside the venue. Technically it's on a cul-de-sac of Mayor St. which is only used for local access by traffic. This also makes it convenient for parking trams at the end of the concert. They can have trams waiting outside the station and move them in quickly to load up people.

Well I still call the venue the Point Depot. I always have and I'll always will. I refuse out of principle to call it by its sponsorship name. I don't get paid a single cent by that company. So why should I give them free advertising ever time I mentioned their name. To be honest, I'm disappointed how quickly people easily dropped the Point's name in favour of a mobile phone company.

The same applies to the new Lansdowne Rd. Especially when that insurance company fired moved hundreds of jobs from Ireland to India and yet could cough up 40 odd million euros to get the their name splashed all over the new ground.

I'm really glad the Stop is call 'The Point' to remind me and other of the real name of the venue.

The Point Depot was formerly the Point Goods Store and was built by the Great Southern & Western Railway in the 1870s.

I have no doubt that the operators of the O2, who are those responsible for ensuring the sponsor's name is used, lobbied the RPA for the Luas stop to be called the O2.

And of course, they didn't have the Bertie power to change "Mayor Square" to "Mayor Square NCI".

Note it is "02" (zero two) not "o2" (Oh two). The company set up by BT when they were splitting off their mobile phone arm was cryptically called MM02 (MM=2000) for the year it was formed, 2002. All the o2, Oxygen and bubble representations are corruption of the original. Both www.02.ie and www.o2.ie work.

Not a whole lot - look at O'Connell Street every few minutes.

The building is the Point Depot. The place is The Point.

And despite Landsdowne Road becoming the Aviva Stadium, the railway station still is (and will likely remain, unless Aviva pay CIE to do so) Lansdowne Road.

Of course, the name of the street hasn't changed...

Note the company is called O2 using the letter not the digit, whatever the origin of the name this is what they call themselves officially on all their literature.

I presume that O2/o2/02 are only sponsoring The Point for a set amount or years, like they did with Drogheda United's ground which was called O2 Park for a year(I think?) instead of United Park. Does anyone know how long the deal is set to last? No sense changing the name of the Luas stop every time the sponsorship of The Point changes.

I think the deal is for 10 years.

Jesus, a corruption? An evolution more like. MM02 was never anything but a corporate name. The brand name (and thus the name they use for their sponsored venues) has always been O2, stylised as the symbol for oxygen.

In fact, I'm not even sure you're right about it being mm02 in the first place. This news story states the company was spun off in 2001, not 2002. And the image indicates the corporate name was always spelled with an O.

Regardless, the brand name is O2 and is now sometimes referred to as O2, a Telefonica company.

Simple-02 wouldn't pay the RPA to rename it
