What is the only situation where a player can claim a pot on the river whithout showing his hand?

    Theoretically,

where the "hero" has bet on the river and not been called by any other player.

I.e. where there is no showdown.

It depends on whether it's a cash game or not. In tournament poker you always have to show your hand, in cash it's not so.

In cash games, if you call some-ones bluff and he mucks then you don't have to show your hand. However if anyone at the table wants to see the hand, then they can request it and it should be shown by the dealer. Although by requesting to see the hand you are implying collusion (accusation of cheating) with the other player and is vey bad ettiqette if you are doing it just for information.
    :)
