If you cant sleep write down all the things that are on your mind/bothering you.

Drink some warm milk, read something that you enjoy be it a magazine/book/etc.

    Then relax.

    Et voila!

The shock passes eventually and things get back to a degree of normality.
Don't worry too much about it, it is a natural reaction.
    I'm sorry for your loss.

Start exercising; you will be tired from working out and will sleep better at night. Will also have you feeling good about yourself.

I suffer from periodic bouts of insomnia. What helps me is exercise as others have mentioned but also doing something in bed that helps your mind switch off. What works for me is throwing on a futurama or family guy dvd, episodes I've seen hundreds of times before and don't need to pay attention to to enjoy. Then I find myself drifting off. This might not work for you but try do something that engages your mind enough to distract from your own thoughts but isn't engaging enough to keep you from sleeping.

Very sorry to hear about your grandad, I'm sure it's a big loss to you.

What time are you getting up in the morning? If you are nodding off at 5am for example and not getting up until 12pm then that can be a tough cycle to break when getting the required number of hours.

Exercise is really important and will aid a good sleep. Lavendar in a warmish bath is also good. Chamomile tea is excellent as is the herb valarian, you can get tablets from your pharmacy (natural) called KALMS and they are also good. Avoid heavy meals and large quantities of alcohol (not that easy around the festive season) as these interfere with a proper sleep. I can understand your frustration but this is only a temporary blip, you'll be back to normal in no time OP.

My mother taught me this and it works for me:
    1) lie on the bed facing the ceiling
    2)Relax your breathing (5 in, 5 hold, 5 out)
    3)Tense your toes (5 tense, 5 hold, 5 relax)
4)Repeat the exercise from the toes to the ankle
5)Repeat the exercise from the toes to the knee
6)Repeat the process until you reach the neck
7)Reverse the process tensing from the toes to the neck
8)Tense the toes to the shoulders
9)Repeat the process until you are finally back at the toes

You should then be ready to sleep.
