Shill bided on ebay

I was intent on getting a capture unit on eBay.ie to convert my priceless NTSC VHSs in to DVDs.

Having found the one I was looking for I put a bid in at my maximum price. $79.. I was soon out bid by two bidders. However Just a few hours later booth bidders retracted there bid?!! < At this point I should have notice something was up.... :( Now I thought I had it for a bargain price of $35. But at the very last minute a bidder puts in a bid just below my maximum bid at 77.55??? WTF :eek: Making me pay my max bid. Looking at it now it looks very suspicious .

I have reported this to eBay ...but it's a bit too late ...as I foolishly paid for it via Paypal with out thinking . :( Seller offers no refund and the unit is untested ....... If it does work I still got a fair deal but if it doesn't I may have wasted €100 inc shipping and duty. To some a large extent my own fault ... I admit. From now on I'm sniping.

Did you report the seller? You can do so by going to:

Help > Contact Us > Buying and Finding > Problems with a seller or purchase > Seller is bidding on their own item with another User ID

As buyers can't receive negative feedback, you could've refused to pay and got an unpaid item strike in the worst possible scenario though you'd probably be able to get it removed.

I agree with JJ if you dont like it, don't pay, report it + leave negative feedback. Then fight the non paying strike if you can be bothered.

btw does anyone know how long a non paying strike lasts or is it permanent?

They stay there for ever. You are best to go NARU and start a new account.

If you go to NARU and start again, which I think is a perfectly good idea, don't you need a new funding source? Like a different credit card? I thought they also tagged the PayPal account and funding account with a NPS?

You will need a different credit card number. That should be easily done.

To some extent my own fault

    Some?
Seller offers no refund and the unit is untested

Why did you bid on an item that was untested and no offer of a refund?

Found a couple of intersting threads on eBay.COM's own forums that make intersting reading, not sure if its the same for ebay.ie but would have thought it would be.

Anyway read here and here (post 13) to see that it seems eBay will remove the FIRST non paying stike with little if any questions asked.

    That is good to know.

I know. I know. I should have known better. ><

If I didn't pay I would have had to pay a 20% restocking fee anyway....
Besides I did't want to ruin my track record with a non paying strike......so I just paid up. :(

But I sure wasn't expecting to be shill bidded .
I reported it again since I didn't receive any response. I sure hope sellers like this one get's banned soon.

Most video machines today can play NTSC so with a DVD recorder you could convert them yourself probably...

You'd wonder do ebay give a fiddlers pluck about this. The higher the price the more commish they get so maybe they'd like shill bidding. I've reported shill bidding a few times and the reply is usually far too late as the auction will have ended and they didn nothing.

Though, if you put in a max bid of $79, isn't the idea of bidding for someone to beat you? And then someone did but yeah it was probably a scam. Sellers can't see max bids surely?

Read the OP's thread? The seller's shill accounts bid on the item to find out how much the OP's maxbid was then retracted their bid, when there was no prospect of a better bid the seller uesd another shill acount to bid just below the OP's max bid.

It couldn't be much simpler than that and the OP explained it well enough?
