Where to get a distributor tested?

My gf's 97 colt has not been starting for 2 weeks now, been told it might be the distributor, so I have been back and fourth to scrap yards getting replacment units for the car and none of them seem to be working. I got one there earlier on today and it's sparking but it still won't fire the car up. I'm starting to wonder is it the distributor thats gone at all?
Mechanic advised us to change the distributor after he came up to the house running various tests but maybe he is misdiagnosing it. The car is taking petrol as the plugs are wet, the engine check light checks out just fine. There is not alot that can stop a car from starting, it can only be a handful of things.. Where can I get the distributors voltage tested so I can rule it out completely? Have a feeling the distributor was fine all along and I've been mucking about in scarp yards for nothing. She is sick of the car now and wants to get rid of it and I don't blame her. Bit of a mystery.

    Cheers

Crank sensor could be my guess if everything else is working.
Not much fun doing the guessing game i know.

It does have an immobiliser however on these cars they usually throw the engine check light when there is an issue with it, the car has an aftermarket laserline alarm however the immob feature on the alarm was not connected
because the car already had the factory immob.

Crank sensor? I'm nearly sure it's built into the distributor I'll have to check that one.
