Not that I want to reduce everything to a poll, but thought this might be useful to get a clearer picture of the Savage Eye thing.

Is the Savage Eye Good or Bad? 62 votes

    Yes, overall good
    0% 0 votes
    No, overall bad

Will you do a poll with a few more options then yes or no. It's alright. But it isn't a yes and it isn't a no.

I cann't vote yet again!

Well you see, I wanted to remove the 'ish' factor.
I think its better that way - the key is the word 'overall'.
If, overall it's not great = no.
If, overall it is = yes.

    Otherwise it's a bit pointless. IMO. ;)

But aren't you making the poll ishy by placing the overall at the end of the yes or no.

You have to have ishyness to allow people give their opinion. I am planning a new poll based on this ishyness. :D

    :D

60/40 to date. Prob with ishyness is you end up with posters huddling around the middle option
    All or nuthin I say.

You didn't see my other TBBT poll, the fans just wanted it to be the best :(

I think it shows some promise. Lots of it is quite poor, but there's the odd interesting/well-observed bit that hints at there being a few sparks in McSavage's mind. It's badly let down by some of the more qrotesque characters (such as the barman), and some of the needlessly surreal bits (The President's fella wearing a birdcage).

However there are some glimmers of hope, a few suggestions that the writers are a little bit sharper the RTÉ average. I liked the sketch about the man being lost in a deserted satellite town; it's reasonably relevant, and it wasn't horribly clichéd. For most Irish comedies, that's a step up.

So overall I don't think it's a very good show, it's far too flawed for that. But it's one of the more ambitious comedies we've seen on irish telly these last few years. I'd like to see it get a second series, so that it might improve. I'm not usually one of these "Oh you can't write it off too early, give it a chance" people; bit on this occasion I think with a little bit of ingenuity, and a little more concentration, McSavage could make a decent show out of this.

That's a far too reasoned and considered opinion for here.

Please just stick to shallow trite responses like "Well I luved it LOL!!" or "Well I tauhgt it sucked. RTE :rolleyes;" next time. You'll only confuse readers here otherwise.

I can't stand him. Far too broadly drawn, and terribly overacted. Whatever satirical momentum the show builds up in any particular installment is thrown away whenever he shows up, for example: "I never seen a burd roidin' a bee. If they did, they'd have a BUMBLEBURD!", delivered in that horrible RTÉ comedy acting style.

The show works best when it's being subtle (which is rare), or when it provides some sort of interesting insight, or holds a mirror to society (which it does the odd time, hence my unwillingness to write it off completely). It's at its worst when it goes for the cheap laughs, and the barman character embodies than in spades.

I woted in the negative. I accept that's it's better than anything else RTE comedy department have forced on us in recent years but that's not much of an acolade. It's a bit like saying "Roxy" is the nicest whore on Benburb St. Lots of poor competition but very little honour.

Actually that brings me along nicely to one of the main problems with McSavage, his over reliance on adult/sexual humour, or smut. He can't seem to shake the urge to drop to base level. Nothing original in his approach to comedy and I question RTE's decision to give him a second series using the tired pattern of his first. He is more miss than hit I reckon and most sane people will agree.

If your going to point out the irony in me using a whore gag then knocking his humour for being smutty don't bother.

Very true. If we were living in a parallel world where RTÉ consistently produced great comedy, then The Savage Eye would seem completely unremarkable, even sub-par. But as it stands, it's the best of a very bad bunch. That doesn't make it good of course, but it makes it seem good in comparison.

I suspect a lot of the people who love it only feel that way because they're so jaded at the other prospects on offer, and not because the show is actually that good. That's not to say there are no good bits in it; there's the odd glimmer of hope. That's why I welcome the second series, to see if those potential nuggets could be unearthed, and maybe the smut done away with.

Of course if it's just going to be more of the same they needn't bother.

(And I liked the whore analogy).

Aint that the sad truth. Still I did LOL for a number of mins which I've never actually done with exclusively produced/ commissioned RTE comedy before. (Vittles raised a smile, but very different sustained humour) (So I voted yes)

Never liked "...Vittles" to be honest; it took me a while to realise it was supposed to be a comedy.

I find if you want a poll to work you really need to attack everyone who posts :D Of course you may find yourself ending up with undesirable results.

Voted in favour, never liked Mc Savages routines in Temple Bar or Grafton Street or wherever but I really liked this show, and not because as some said it's just slightly better then the usual RTE comedy drivel but because I actually found it funny!

I didnt like some of the sketches(the president and her housebound, russell brand imitation and whenever mcsavage plays the guitar and sings)
But largely found the rest quite funny and interesting,it also semms to have a much higher level of production then most of the usual rte stuff which helps too imo.

have been watching it .... missed some of it tonight ...but overall....its got its moments.

some of the sketches are the same ould jokes repeated.... the president and her "it" doesnt work for me !!

the guy in the bar - worked first couple of times but now its just .....ah...just say the line "them queeeeeers" (no offence to gay people - its just the way he says it)

have to say I really enjoy the random "catholic church" sketches .... where a priest runs with a child underarm.... gets me laughing everytime.....i think it was last week there was a secondary priest on distraction duty and then....*Snatch an run*

It's better than I thought it would be (my expectations were extremely low) but I wouldn't go as far as to call it good. It has some good moments but too many duds too. Overall I wouldn't rate it any better than "alright".

It's nothing special but better than most stuff on offer at the moment. I think a lot of people are begrudging because of their opinions of Mcsavage, he may be a dich but the show isnt terrible
