Amazon pumps up listed price on checkout

I just ordered a number of items on Amazon. I would normally not check the total, just assume they can add but I realised there is a sneaky price pump on items when you go through checkout. I called customer service and they bothered it away using shipping as an excuse but I complained about consumer law here and misleading pricing and they changed the prices to those advertised.

Be careful - this is a widespread policy on their side so you will get caught if you are not careful.

Are you sure it is not VAT rate change which would only be changed at check out as it would depend to which (EU) country you are shipping it?

Nothing sneaky about it - it's the different VAT rate kicking in.

You are buying from a UK based site. The prices displayed assume that the goods are being shipped to the UK and so apply the UK VAT rate of 15% to the selling price. When the system realizes that the goods are being shipped to the ROI they apply the local VAT rate of 21.5% to the selling price rather than the 15%, this VAT is then paid to the Revenue Commissoners rather than to H.M.C.E..

Under EU law, companies are required to register with the local tax authorities if their sales to the country are over a certain threshold. From 1st Jan, the difference wont be as bad as the UK rate is going upto 17.5% while the Irish one is going down to 21%
