    Hi all.
Total newbie to golf. I picked up a set of spalding golf clubs for €40 a couple of weeks back and have been goin to the driving 2 or 3 times a week. I finally got out for my first round last friday in Waterford Golf Club and i loved every second of it. I am strongly thinking about joining Dunmore East golf Club. I was just wondering has anybody played this course or know what its like?

You need to play it first and talk to other members if you can. Then base your decision on your experiance. IMHO, Dunmore is not in the same league as Waterford. (apologies to any members on here). Some friends of mine are actually moving away from Dunmore East GC this year.

It all depends on what you are looking for, as you a starting out it may be a lower cost option to get you up and running, and you could look elsewhere further down the line. IMO Dunmore is a very poor course, the members are probably all great, but the course is a let down, in terms of condition and layout. You should try and get a game in a few of the courses locally and then see what deals are to be done as they are all struggling at the moment.

Would agree with all the above.

Some may say that starting out, joining any old place will do, but I think it can make life difficult. I started somewhere pretty crappy and, as with most places, while the course wasn't good, the members were great.

It was poxy when the time came to leave and in truth, golf wasn't the same again for me, until quite recently. I'm back somewhere with the best of both worlds now. I know that I couldn't stick playing a poor course week-in-week-out, but having been through the whole moving-club thing, I'd never advise anyone to join somewhere with a view to moving on later.

Money is of course a seperate issue, but I thought this point was worth highlighting.

Hey,I recently moved to dunmore east golf club from Waterford Golf Club, I found dunmore much nicer and in recent years the condition has improved immensely, found waterford far too cramped and tight a course and the clay greens really did not appeal to me. The stuffy atmosphere of the clubhouse was not very friendly either. It will be am interesting year for golf courses lots of price drops all over the country, cheap green fees :):):) how did you get on keithg89, play any other courses around?

I'm a member with years, definitely improving slowly but surely though i don't ever expect it to be in the same league as the other courses in Waterford due to purse strings etc.

Still i love it out there, very relaxed (possibly a bit too much at times LOL), memebrs very friendly with no real cliques.

Easy to get a game as always room on time sheets apart from maybe open 9 hole fourballs on Tuesday evenings which are very popular.

The greens are small and tricky to read but have improved over the last 18 months. It's in a difficult spot i guess up on the cliff when it comes to harsh weather. As previous poster said a few new tee boxes and couple of new greens have livened the place up. Plenty of new trees lining the fairways trying to tighten the place up a bit. I guess my pet hate about the place is the tee boxes, could be much better. Holes 6/7/14/15 and 16 are the holes i will never get tired of playing. The start of each nines can be a bit boring though.
As i said you get what you pay for (with regards membership) but i get my value for money playing there and the crack is decent.
That's my honest asessment of the place.

Couple of nice holes on it but would not be a fan of the place,as you are only starting out go off and play as many of the local courses as you can and then decide where you want to join.

"won't improve due to purse strings" probly true but if they tried to increase revenue to do more improvements by putting up our renewal fees we'de be the first ones whinging? as far as location goes it think it could not be more perfect, if your'ed worried about being exposed look at the old head of kinsale! as far as being in the same league as the other clubs i think it is starting to surpass some of them. I was a member in waterford for years and as I stated its far to tight, don't really like the castle either very flat and boring holes, heard they in trouble money wise as well, hate to pay membership there then the place go broke................

I would have to agree with boardlog on this one, myself and my work mates moved from the castle last year, we just got fed up with the overpriced bordom of both the course and a lot of the members, in fairness to dunmore they are very committed, we played there yesterday morning before the rain and i spoke to a member of the greenkeeping team who said that they plan to have all the tee boxes sorted out by august:) it is nice to see a club investing a lot of money in the course especially when everyone else is cutting back, as seinfield said the other members are great craic and see the real side of golf IE-:):):)FUN. I dont think the course is surpassing any yet other than williams town(dump) but i really dont think it will be long until it is on the same level. and thats my honest opinion:D
