    Galway/Dublin motorway to open
    Friday, 18 December 2009 07:37

The final section of the new Galway to Dublin motorway will open later this morning cutting the journey time between the two cities to approximately two hours.

The M6 Galway to Ballinasloe stretch has been completed four months ahead of schedule.

Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey will cut the ribbon on the new M6 motorway east of Ballinasloe at 11am.

The 56km stretch runs as far as the outskirts of Galway city.

Built at a cost of €427m, the M6 is expected to save up to half an hour in journey time between Galway and Ballinasloe.

Many road users have already driven the route when it was opened temporarily during the recent flooding.

Motorists will pay a toll of €1.90 near Ballinasloe and €2.90 on the M4 Kinnegad toll.

There are no protests expected at this mornings opening as local farmers and householders have been meeting engineers from the motorway construction company in relation to repair work on any damage caused to roads and lands in the area.
