PhDs in the humanities/social sciences: research jobs?

Is there any hope? I got conferred with my PhD very recently and I'm wondering where people in a similar situation find research jobs.

I haven't much interest in the post-doc merry-go-round in academia, but I would love to spend my life investigating, researching and, most of all, problem solving on projects as a result of researching and thinking about things. I've never got that kick anywhere else.

But where in the world do I find jobs that would allow me to do this?

Outside of the Republic maybe? I know Belfast is awash with research jobs and always will be given the amount of social organisations and thinktanks there are up here. Might we worth a peek if you fancy a move!

There's always much further afield too...

You could try some of the semi-state bodies (e.g. HRB, CSO, Centre for Housing Research , National Children's Office) as they would have research positions that come up. However, with the embargo at the moment, there may not be as many as before.

Or, you could also try some of the private research companies. There are not many of these but have a look in the golden pages and fire off C.V.s.

I agree with pow wow that up North there are a fair few research jobs also.

Have a look at some of the professional research organisations (e.g. SRA) as they send out newsletters with research jobs and being a member you could network with other researchers. Good Luck!
