Mario Galaxy or New Super Mario Bros Wii are the two best ones. They won't be disappointed with either.

Mario Galaxy is the cheapest since it's been out the longest. However it's a little bit more complicated for very young kids not used to 3D games.

New Super Mario Bros Wii is just out and fantastic. It's very simple, anyone can pick up and play it and there's support for 2-4 players at the same time unlike in galaxy which is 1 player only.

I'll second Mario Galaxy, haven't played NSMB yet, but haven't heard anything bad about it.

it's not completely single player, while one person is running around doing stuff the other person can use the wiimote to collect stars and fire them at bad guys to stun them. maybe they could take turns doing levels? or go life by life

Traditionally, I've always found that the 2d mario games are easier for kiddos to pick up and play than the 3d ones.
That being said I still haven't played NSBW. Though it sounds to me like the more kid friendly and family orientated option.
