Where to live in Dublin?

    Hi all,

Just joined the forum and need some advice, go easy on me ;).

I've accepted a permanent job offer at a tech firm in Dublin 18 and I need a bit of advice as to which areas are good for living.

I'm from London so I'm city wise but I don't want to end up living in a total hole, no offence, every city has them after all.

I also would like to be in walking/short tram distance from central Dublin and whilst I understand that it'll be more expensive I'm willing to pay that premium.

Could you advice me as to which areas are good to live in and which areas I should definitely avoid?

    Cheers!!!

Welcome to boards and Dublin Jokerman, I'd like to give you advice but your post may be in conflict with the Dublin City charter rules, post 2.

somewhere along the luas green line would be handy for you, the city centre is roughly 20 mins away on the tram. check daft for property around the area

Ranelagh is nice and it's close to the city. Full of restaurants and bars. If you are going to be based in cherrywood or sandyford (which I suspect you are) the green line luas stops in sandyford currently and will be going to cherrywood from next year.

What exactly are you looking to get from the area you live in?

Firstly thanks for all the replies.

@whoopsadaisydoodles you guessed correct and TBH I have transport sorted so luas is not really an issue.

Ideally I'd like to be in an area that is relaxed and have that restaurant and quiet local pub feel to it.
I'm a city guy at heart so It needs to be in short commute distance to central Dublin or I could be at risk of going slowly mad.
A local gym would be handy.
I don't want an area completely buzzing with nightclubs for example, but If I need to get my fix of socialising I can.

Of course all those points I've raised are subjective and non-quantifiable!

But would you think that it's possible to achieve? If so where would you suggest?

    thanks.

Ranelagh / Rathmines would be my recommendation! Great areas, lots of stuff right there, within walking distance of city centre, but also have quiet roads. Actually Dublin is quite small, get a short term flat and work out the rest when you get here.
Dublin being small means that all areas will be quite mixed. There are local authority housing in both Ranelagh and Rathmines and anywhere else near the city centre, but there's also a high proportion of owner-occupied in the same places. Near the canal would give you an idea about distance to city centre. Ranelagh has something like 38 restaurants/cafes, Rathmines (5 minutes away) has hardware shops, shopping centre, bookshops, bike shops, library, swimming pool etc; Harolds Cross has greyhound racing and late night pharmacies, etc etc. Get a bike and you're sorted.

Ranelagh is definitely where you want to be. LUAS to work, LUAS or walk to town. Nice pubs/restaurants, not too busy or noisy.

I second that, I lived there a few years during the celtic tiger boom years. It probably has not changed that much in the past few years. Its quite central to many attractions.... much better than living 10 or 15 miles from the city centre.

Ranelagh is definitel a buzzy place but in a good way.

There's quite a few bedsits etc there but some really nice accommodation too.

Is it a particular type of accommodation you are looking for?

Thanks everyone, that is quite a resounding answer to my question.

I guess the type of place I'm looking at would be something like this:-

    http://www.daft.ie/searchrental.daft?id=825211&search=1

Although I would definitely need to negotiate on the rent!

I've heard that it is quite possible given current market conditions, if anyone has any experience with that I would be really grateful to hear them.

    Cheers.

and remember haggle, haggle, haggle. knock at least 10% off asking rental price. everybody's doing it & landlords expect it now.

that is a lovely apartment on a great road... you could get the landlord down to 900e i would imagine....

ranelagh is amazing, i absolutely love living here and i know i'll be gutted when i come to buying my own house and i have to leave the area...

best of luck in dublin, i made the move here (back) from london a couple of years ago.... it's definitely different!

yes - haggling is the name of the game right now. left my old place before the summer after getting them to reduce the price by 300 per month. Moved on anyhow as I found a much nicer place...which we got for 200 less then the price advertised.

Ranelagh is a nice area, I lived in Rathmines before and i like the buzz around there (it's a bit more lively in Rathmines then Ranelagh but they are beside each other so makes little difference), a few nice local bars, supermarkets near by etc.

personnally my favourite area to be in is City Centre D2 (as I'm lazy and hate paying for taxis home at night) followed by Rathmines/Ranelagh D6 area.

    I'd give this a miss...
Obviously some of Dublins landlords need a reality check.
