Have just been to Canaries after ten years or so. When I last visited it was nearly all Mercedes taxis. Things have changed there are still a few 123 series going, I saw a 240d stretch with seating in the back for five or six. I also saw a number of 123s and 124s. However the Toyota seems to have taken over the mantle. There are loads of 00 corollas with several hundred thousand on the clock also the more modern avensis is common. I asked one of the drivers and he said that the new Mercs were too expensive. Loads of privately owned 190s here and other older mercs, no rust of course but a million miles on the clock. Nothing on he windscreen here no nct , tax or insurance shown !!! Taxi fares dirt cheap 10 mins in a taxi travelling the whole time for 5 euro. Maybe a bit of sunshine would sort out all the probs in Ireland !!!

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

My last time in the canaries was in Tenerife early last year and most taxis were W124 250d. The last one I was in was just shy of a million kilometres :)

I am in Tenerife a good few times a year. Definately the weapon of choice is still the w124, but there are a good few Octavias and Avensi now. Last month when I was coming back to the airport I was in a 407 with 350k kms.

I think pints for €1 and good weather could definately work wonders in Ireland. Here's hoping.

Yeah pints for euro , and a bit of that sunshine would definitely hasten our recovery:D
On the taxis front , the more modern mercs are not taking over from the 123 and 124 indeed. Reliability and durability isn't there so Octavia, Toyota etc seems to have taken over. Good to see the 123s still moving and indeed the 124s.:p

I was in Morrocco about 5 years ago, and w123's were everywhere. Many of them were running 24hrs a day, with intergalactic miles on them. This is one of the reasons I now own one (admittedly, mines a 230E, so its not taxi material!)

Rare Moroccan estate taxi with 5 goats on the roof and 3 in the boot.

There are a few small towns between Casablanca and Essaouira where a huge amount of the taxis are Opel Rekords. Don't know the last time I saw one here, they used to be everywhere.
