Safest way to delete lightroom photos and catalogs for storage saving purposes

Unfortunately my photos are taking up way too much room on my computer and I want to back them up to a hard disk.

I'm looking for the safest way to remove these from the computer but for Lightroom to still be able to access the external hard drive. I basically don't want to have lightroom not being able to find my files; if that makes any sense

Are the catalogs and the photos within the same folder structure?

if so I would chance moving the images and 1 catalog to the new drive and open the moved catalog file in light room and seeing if that worked

One of the first lessons on LR.
No matter where are the files, previews and data are saved in the library. Therefore if you have the LR library on your main HDD and files on external one, you are still able to work with the previews, catalouge and so. Only module that won't work is the Develop module that needs to access the original files.
Just add another folder to your library on the external HDD and then drag and drop folders from main HDD to the new folder. DO ALL SUCH DRAG AND DROP OPERATIONS IN LIGHTROOM!

Only just saw this so not sure if you were sorted or not.

Move the folder of images that you have onto your external HDD. When you open LR again it will show a question mark on the folder itself. Right click on said folder and click on 'Find Missing Folder' which will offer you a browse directory where you can find the new location - easy as that!! ;)
