Hi. We will probably be getting a PS3 into the house for Christmas and I was wondering which is the best football game for it?

Back in the old days I used to prefer PES on the PS2 but i've heard that Fifa is better these days? I'd be very interested to hear what people think about it.

    Thanks

Its a funny one...you have camp PES who prefer it and camp Fifa who prefer it.
A lot of people migrated over to camp Fifa - me included, although mine was just to try it out - they obviously have a much better marketing department (budget) but to be honest I don't get Fifa - its awful.

I was a big fan of Fifa 96 & 98 but since then it just looks plastic. The latest games on PS3 are poor in my opinion - the gameplay is slow, the variety of goals is extremely limited, after you play 15or20 games every variety of goal is done and after that one game rolls into another without any variance.

PES gameplay is far superior and its not very often you score the same kind of goal, the gameplay is quicker and slicker and the new Master League has got a well deserved overhaul, with more depth and reward added, you can now buy players without obstacles (as long as you have the required money).

Yes Fifa has the kits and licences but thats it, PES now has a proper Champions league system and its also included in the Master League, which is cool.

PES10 is definitely the best of the last 3 PES games, other people will have their own opinions and whats above is only mine.

If your a good player and want to play ranked online, don't get FIFA,

I broke mine of the wall last night, have two accounts in the top 100 in eire, once i passed 4000 ranked points this ''momentum/scripted'' crap just kicked in and i couldnt win more then 2 games in a row, there was a MASSIVE thread on the offical FIFA forum about it last year, was denied and put to the 100's of posters that it was in our heads, it was just a coincidence that your passes were going all over the place, defence not able to win clean ball. missing from literally 4 yards numerous times, defenders going missing, passing options running AWAY from you, leaving the ball carrier stranded.

I probably shouldnt have broke it though but it goes to show the frequency and level of annoyance it reaches, i don't want to play something that randomly decides that it's going to make it next to impossible for me to win at any given point..... and with that i'm going back to PES

Was always a big fan of PES on PS2 and was disappointed with the first few games on PS3 so bought FIFA 10 this year. Was impressed with it for first few weeks but then began getting frustrated with the ease to score from long range as the goalies stray so far off the line! Also can't use manager mode teams in exhibition mode!!!!

Yeah, I was always in the PES camp on the PS2. I didn't care for the licences or any of that stuff because the gameplay was far superior on PES.

I haven't play any of them in a few years though and was just wondering whether people thought that Fifa had caught up (or passed out) in terms of gameplay?

I have and love PES2010. Massive improvement over last years. Gameplay is closer to how it was on the PS2 than any of the other next-gen efforts.

I like the way you can pass the ball in FIFA but it feels like a 5-a-side, with the ball rarely leaving the ground properly and all the goals feel kind of generic.

You also have to use the stick, I prefer the d-pad.

Ive heard the opposite, the problem with Pro Evo is that its just the same game each year with slightly better graphics, the game play hasnt improved a whole lot so you basically paying for a game with small improvements over the previous year. With fifa though they seem to be trying to improve the gameplay in leaps and bounds each year. A few years back the fifa games where terrible, they have come a long way though. A lot of PES fans i know have changed over to fifa this year for this very reason.

I am not too sure how that is the opposite of anything I said to be perfectly honest.

What you said reads like some marketing piece actually, PES defo stagnated up until 09 but there is no doubt this year's edition is much better than the last.

Sales will tell you which is more popular but PES just has more subtle nuances for me - more varied gameplay and goals - you can be playing the game for ages and it will still surprise you with a certain type of shot orun that you didn't think was possible.

Whoops, i was replying to Digsey32 i think you posted while i was writing mine apologies there.

Certainly not a marketing piece at all, ive played both just prefer fifa and a couple of mates who would never touch fifa previously swear by it now. One in paticular used to play no game other than pro evo but is constantly on fifa.

I used to judge anyone who owned Fifa back in the day, now I haven't played a game in years but bought a ps3 recently and it came with Fifa and I feel dirty...Did PES really get that bad?

    Okay no problem.

It appears that a few people are in agreement that the Fifa games become repetitive after a few games...goals scored become the same and the gameplay predictable.

Where as PES10 throws up new surprises all the time with each goal scored different than the last one.

A lot of my friends switched to the dark side previously but a lot have come back with the latest version.

For me gameplay, unpredictability, variances in goals scored, players in game reactions - off ball running, defenders closing down, midfield making space etc are more important than some fancy gimmicks that EA have introduced.

Ive got both. FIFA is better playing against the computer and online. PES is better playing with friend/group of lads offline.

Haven't played the newest PES but Fifa is boring and the fun is gone out of it. I don't buy these "updates" each year but I remember Fifa being fun once. Its not anymore...

Alright thanks for that lads. Think I might get PES so since I've always preferred that and it seems to have returned to form with the latest version. Cheers

Give it a few games to get used to and then let us know what you think...

On the last gen of consoles I was firmly in the PES camp, got a PS3 the other day and it came with FIFA and I gotta say, after setting it up with essentially the PES controls because I'm very resistant to change, I'm really enjoying it. Really seems to play like a proper football game these days. The online was also brilliant, runs pretty much perfectly for me anyway.

I also downloaded the PES2010 demo and I gotta say, it is only a demo I know, but I'm definitely preferring FIFA, and it pains me to say that as someone who would refuse to be friends with someone who owned FIFA on the ps2. Now I've only had the games a matter of days so these are first impressions but FIFA has really surprised me
