I've put the following documents online for anybody interested but afraid to ask for them. In this day and age these documents and even more up to date figures should be put online. For anybody unused to accounts, they are published a year behind. Also the SFC accounts are the full accounts and not the abridged accounts filed at the Companies Registration Office.

You can read or download them from here.
    • DCU Student Finance Committee Ltd accounts 2008*
    • DCU Students' Union accounts 2008
    • DCU Societies & Publications Committee accounts 2008
    • DCU Sports Clubs Committee accounts 2008
    • Office of Student Life Constitution

    * The SFC was rebranded the Office of Student Life, but it's legal, registered name has apparently not being changed for some reason.

I've included the Office of Student Life Constitution as it seems to be a mysterious document. Or at least some people think it is, I just asked for it and was sent to me. :)

A couple of points I'd make about these accounts, firstly these are for the academic year 2007-8 not the calendar year 2008.
Secondly one of the things I and others felt during my term was that the accounting system for the office of student life and the SU was overly complicated for what it had to do. Also if you notice huge differences in figures in the accounts from one year to the next it sometimes had more to do with how expenses were recorded rather than a huge shift in spending in an area. So before I left myself and the manager of the office of student life started a process of reform that will hopefully, when the time comes to publish the accounts for my year, result in a much simpler and easier to understand system for both the OSL and the SU making these accounts much easier to read for people not involved.

Would it be to much to ask for these accounts to be send out to the entire student body as an email?

My argument would be that every student is a stakeholder having paid registration fee at the start of the year. Also I would recommend sending out this academic years accounts.

They're presented at the UGM in the second semester every year and an email is sent out to every student saying that they will be. If you're interested you can go along to that which is of far more benefit than simply e-mailing them out because at that meeting you have the President, the entire exec and the manager of the office of student life who can explain why X amount was spent on any given thing.
If you miss the meeting and are interested in the accounts all you have to do is ask for them. This way anyone who is interested gets to see the accounts, anyone who isn't doesn't have to. This runs the risk of turning into two threads on the same issue but I have to say everything has two sides, if you can't be arsed to go to a meeting or to send a simple email to get information why should anyone be arsed to simply land the information in your lap? The people who are interested, get involved, but in a little bit of effort and show up get the information and to a certain extent that's how it should be.

I was requesting the email not for myself, I was requesting it for everybody... I cant see why the accounts couldnt be sent by email as there is virtually no cost to issue them and it will also the student body to see exactally what the SPC do?

If these documents are available on Life.dcu.ie then I would recommend not emailing them to everyone as it will be viewed as spam by the vast majority of the student body.

What should be done, however, is that a reference to them becoming available be made part of a weekly letter being sent out by the SU. At least that way you can cut down on the potential complaints. :)

Yes, that sounds like a good plan.
