The 1st book on which the show is originally based is "Darkly Dreaming Dexter":

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Darkly-Dreaming-Dexter-Jeff-Lindsay/dp/0752865749/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1260863816&sr=1-2

Season 1 follows the main plot of the book closely enough (though there are still notable differences - read some of the reviews on Amazon) but from season 2 onwards, the TV show starts deviating a lot more from the books (which IMO is good, because I'm not thrilled with where the books are going currently), using only a few ideas here and there from the books themselves.

Dexter is one of the rare cases where I think the show is better than the books, though the books themselves can be pretty good, just quite different.

The first two are great but as J-blk said the book and the T.V. series diverge at the end of the first book and then they are completely separate.

The third, "Dexter in the Dark" was a bit crap and the fourth, "Dexter by Design", was an improvement but still not up to the standard of the first two.

There were some similarities in the 2nd book and 3rd series. The skinner in the series is similar to the character in the 2nd book, and there's an FBI agent too. I think the TV series does it a lot better, the books are not as good.

Yeah , the books are going down a bit, and unless something amazing happens the Title Dexter is Delicious doesn't fill me with confidence
