    Hello all,

Not too sure how to describe this but when the computer starts it logs on normally. The desktop screen shows the background but none of the icons. Mouse clicking of any sort doesn't do anything. Pressing the windows start button on the keyboard does nothing.

Files/programmes can still be accessed and perform normally by using the windows task manager.

Have tried a system restore but no change. Currently looking for the disks to reinstall windows but cant find them.

    Has anybody any ideas?

Have you tried file- run and type explorer? Sometimes it brings them back!

I get that problem too sometimes, but going into task manager and running 'explorer.exe' usually works (as corriganalan says). However, the odd time it is due to an I/O error with one of my USB devices. Simply unplugging it lets Windows load normally.
