DO NOT GO NEAR CORRIB VILLAGE

Cannot overstate this. The place is a damp, cramped, filthy dump with the worst management imaginable. Not to mention if you get lumped with people you don't like/slobs, nothing will be done, whatsoever.

As you probably read in the thread ciano1 directed you to, I strongly disagree with this statement. I couldnt imagine myself living anywhere else than Corrib in first year.

The place is undeniably of a brutally poor standard of accomodation in general for the price people are expected to pay, it's damp and dirty and a load of stuff is just plain dodgy. The majority of people that go for Corrib are immature yahoo's who are hyped up over being away from Mammy and Daddy for the first time and consider being inconsiderate of other people to be wild and impressive. Obviously some people get lucky, but like I said you can't choose who you live with and you're essentially stuck with who you get with absolutely no help coming from management when it comes to anything beyond the very basics. Your own personal experience isn't much of a pull-factor for other people going in - the definites are the state of the place and the standard of neighbours overall.

Overall I don't think it's worth the risk. I'd say go for one of the much nicer student villages if anywhere; I do think it's a bit much of a step going for a house or that unless you're going to be living with people you know quite well. At least that way you're guaranteed of better management and proper facilities.

Again, I disagree when people say most, the majority or alot of people they meet in Corrib are "immature yahoos", as Claypigeon puts it. I have come across a few people who are ASBOs in training, but you will come across thesepeople wherever you go. The vast amount of people I've met and got to know are the nicest people, and nearly all enjoy living in Corrib.

I think Corrib just has a bad reputation from a few people who had bad experiences there. For example, just yesterday I was coming back from an exam with someone else who lived in Corrib and we were chatting to a girl on the bus. When we told her we lived in Corrib she was asking were we able to get to sleep at all? I found it surprising to be asked this because I never had any trouble with noise but apparently thats how people who dont live there view it.

Its really only the first week or so that there are mad parties everywhere. After that it quietens down alot and there are only parties if its a birthday or theres something on. Saying that though, you'll never be without a good party in Corrib.

All in all, if you want a student accomodation close to college, full of new first years to make friends with, good party life in your first year of college, Corrib village is for you.

Passing off fact as "what people that don't live there have made up" isn't really on when it comes to where someone's thinking of living for an entire academic year. Noise is absolutely an issue. People routinely come around screaming and slamming on doors in both my own building and 3-4 other friends buildings (none of these are close together either). The place is overrun with people hyped up on their first time without being kept in line by pushy parents. Go for another student village, a slightly longer walk is not a bgi deal when you make it only once or twice a day.

hmm.. how about, if you think youd be up for the wilder, 1st year mad and sociable accommodation and dont think youd mind the accomodation in corrib too much (not that any student accommodation is fantastic - look at amhra house thread) then go for it. If you prefer the quieter villages and like your home comforts then stay away from corrib.

i dont live in corrib but have been there loads and the accommodation is fine, duno what the big deal is about it being horrible

Its not what they made up, but exaggerated bad experiences of Corrib.

Well, people never came screaming and slamming on my door, or my friends doors for that matter.

If I apply for a twin room in Corrib will I just be thrown into a room with some randomner? It's a lot cheaper than a single room....

Pretty much yeah, unless ya know someone ya want to stay with you can apply to stay with them.

No I don't know anyone. A bit risky no?

Personally I wouldnt go for the twin room incase you get thrown in with someone you dont like. At least you can get away from your housemates in a single room if you dont get along with them.

Im living in Corrib at the moment and while it can be pretty mad at times, I have made lots of friends and I wouldnt like to be anywhere else.

Think my parents will make me because it's a fair bit cheaper, and you know recession an' all! :o

If i could weigh in as a "mature voice".. I'm 21, doing 2 masters at the same time, as well as working full time. i came from corrib.. So, we are not all scum.

Corrib is a dingy, cramped, cold, expensive **** place to live, but at 17 years of age, is the most amazing place in the world. nowhere in Galway, or indeed Ireland, has the same atmosphere as that place, and i really wish almost every day i was 17 and back there again.

I would tell everyone in 6th year who has a personality, and enjoys interacting with people, that they will simply love Corrib. I met all my best friends there. You make bonds for life in that place
Regarding the twin room.... It wouldnt be for me now, but a friend of mine did it in first year and got on really well with the randomer he was put with.

Try not to worry about it too much. Corrib is right next to the campus, that is why its mostly first years... and first years didn't get reputations of drunken yahoos for nothing. If you are looking for a wild year, go to corrib.

Regarding a room mate, its hit and miss, but if it is miss. You may make a friend for life or you may end up with a freak.. It is all down to luck... But think; how much time will you be spending in your room anyway... I'm sure you have better plans of being off in the college bar and hitting the usual student spots... So many you are going to enjoy! :D

I have heard that Corribe is nicer, but it is a walk away from the university over a big bridge where the wind goes right through you. If you want a quieter life, go there, but you still will be putting up those risks over there...

Good luck to all of you, Enjoy first year.. NUIG is great...

CORRIB VILLAGE is the most perfect place for 1st year. I can't stress that enough. I wouldn't dream of putting a first year anywhere else. It breaks you into your new college life by helping you to immediately meet loads of people.

I'm in 3rd engineering, and our 1st year was pretty demanding, but it didn't suffer because of Corrib Village. If anything it kept me happy under all the stress!

Don't go for a twin. There's so much disadvantages that really don't outweigh the cost. Offer to pay the extra for a single (by summer job or w/e) and stress that you need your own privacy.

If you're worried about people being rough or loud, you can request to move in with people you know or trust. I don't recommend this. Ask on your application form for block A or something as they're generally the quietest. But Corrib is the best. Honest!
