job seekers for a couple vs. individual

    Quick question:

a couple ar living together and are unemployed:

They apply for job seekers and are successful ..will the fact that they are a couple go against them in terms of what they can get?

i.e i think job seekers allowance is about 200 euro/week. If the 2 people above apply as individuals, they will get 200 odd each/week ..(400 odd in total)

but is it true if they apply as a couple, they will get 200( 1st person) and 100(second person only gets half as their partner now has an income)?

    Is this true? Thnaks

pretty much the case. you have to remember that a couple would have one esb bill between them, one mortgage or rent payment between them, one tv licence, one wheelie bin service etc etc.

a lot of their expenses are shared so the payment is not double that of a single person.

well, thats assuming the single person lives by himself, which is usually not the case as its very expensive... most single people live with flatmates , and also share the above charges...

surely most couples just say 'oh she is just my friend I live with, not my partner'..or am I missing something?

Yes that would be fraud as you are lying to social welfare about your circumstances. The rate for a couple is only on allowance. If both qualify for benefit they'll both get 200
