Hi I'm just wondering why endothelial cells needs special culture media, which is really expensive?
I'm using HMEC-1 cell line, and lonza endothelial media, but just tried over the weekend with normal RPMI supplemented media & the cells grew really well. Is there any particular reasons why i cant use the normal media?

given that im not familiar with the cell line i couldnt say exactly. But, on a general note, many cells grown in culture lose their characteristic epitopes, perhaps the specialised media ensures the cells stay as perfect as possible.

well who said you "can't" use normal media? Companies will often tell you that you need to use their special media for obvious finacial reasons for themselves. Best thing is to consult the literature and see what other people use. AFAIK many cell types will grow with many different media, i've heard usually its decided by which media a particular lab uses be it DMEM or RPMI.

I personally worked with both human and bovine aortic endothelial cell lines and we used RPMI with 1%pen/strep, 10% FBS and they grew fine. Every cell line is different though so I would check vialbilty and cell surface markers maybe to ensure that your cells are the way the should be!
