"No Junk Mail"

Was doing some junk mail / leaflet delivery the other day to raise money for local sports club and got to thinking.

If a house has a "no just mail" sign on the letterbox, is there any sort of legal prohibition on delivering unsolicited mail to the house?

I'm not aware of any specific legislation but I was thinking could this possibly come under the heading of trespass? Just wondering what anyone's thoughts on this are.

With the amount of junk mail being delivered I wouldnt say its illegal to do.

The way I look at it is at least some people are getting a few euro for doing it:D

I wish I could post that up on this site, as the current No Junk Mail signs are IGNORED. ;)

There is implied consent that people can walk up to your front door and use the letter box (unless letter box is at gate).

Putting a "No Junk Mail" sign at your front door doesn't do as much as if it was on your front gate.

    There are two possible trespasses
    1. Physically being on your property.
    2. Leaving the junk mail.

The real problem is enforcing against these.

If you really want to make a point about a particular delivery, complain to the advertiser.

Don't forget that a lot of the junk mail is delivered by your postman. They never obey the "No Junk Mail" stickers and I'm not talking about the bills..

I know a fella who put a sticker on his letter box four months ago saying "Official An Post mail only"

He hasn't received any junk mail since....

Good point - i was delivering flyers for the business I ran, and I certainly didnt feel it was 'junk'

I didnt deliver to houses with clear signs that could be seen from the path, but the houses with a little tiny sign on the letterbox (when you have walked up the path).....

Has he received any post at all? :)

I presume the only thing he receives is his TV licence. :)

Er, yes.... Whatever the postman has in his bag addressed to him....

It has stopped the likes of the OP, who appears not to be a postman, putting crap through his letterbox.

Gonna give it a shot myself as I hate junk/advertising/charity mail & people traipsing across my grass after because they can't be bothered going back down the drive.

Anything that comes through my letter box that doesn't have my name and address is junk mail.

I put a "No Junk Mail" sticker on my front door some time back. Its been about 90% successful.

The thing that really annoys me now is the amount of those plastic bags and stickers that I still get from obscure charities that Ive never heard of, looking for old cloths and books etc . I end up using them for rubbish bags. Ive tried leaving them on the doorstep but they never seem to be collected, Ive ended up with a drawer full of them from dozens of different strange charities. It is now a matter of principle with me that I will not leave unwanted items in these bags, I bring anything suitable straight to a recognised charity shop.
