    so heres the situation:

approaching Yield T junction from minor to major road, there is a slip lane (about 100m long) and a main lane at junction.

when there is no/light traffic on main lane this is easy, just turn left at junction into slip lane and move out into main lane after checking mirrors.

however when there is heavy traffic on main lane what should one do?

    1) Approach and stop at yield sign (even though slip lane is empty) and wait until enough of a gap appears in main traffic so that you can get into and out of slip lane in good time

2)Continue into empty slip lane and risk getting stuck there if nobody lets you into main traffic.

1 could be considered correct because it seems to be the best / safest way to get into the main lane of traffic...but are you breaking a rule by stopping at a yield sign when your lane (slip) is clear

2 could be considered correct because you occupy the slip lane when its empty...but you might get into trouble getting out of it.

    any thoughts?

I'd probably go in the slip lane slowly while indicating out, and stopping at the end of it only if there wasn't a space.

Hard to say for certain without seeing the actual junction. It really depends on traffic, your car, your confidence and competence. If your car can get up to the speed of the traffic, and stop again if needs be, with some room to spare within the slip lane, then you can consider it.

On the other hand, if traffic is silly (100kph with two car lengths between each car), then don't.

The bottom line is that you shouldn't really be obliging anybody to 'let you in', beyond maybe easing off the throttle for a moment to maintain a safe distance.

Don't do this. In busy fast moving traffic, nobody is going to shed 40+kph to let you in.
