Anybody bought or used any of these recently ? I am thinking of getting one for a present and could do with a recommendation.
Also, who do you get the maps from and are there any compatibility issues with different units ?

HID has offered to buy one for me for xmas. Looking at the Golf Buddy which is the most expensive on the market but there is no annual fee or download fee as 20,000 courses worldwide are already downloaded.
The other systems require an annual fee of approx £40 and only hold between 10 and 20 courses.

    Any one with any recommendations.

Been looking into these. First of all I am quite surprised that all the courses over here have been mapped and the maps seem to be available for all systems.
Looks like the big advantage with the Golf Buddy is that you don't have to pay an annual fee for the maps so will save money in the long run. Also its only €200 approx in the US but €379 here in McGuirks
The Caddy Lite gets great reviews and is relatively cheap. The subs for the maps is dear enough though at stg£40 per annum (with golf-plus.co.uk , can't find anywhere else at the moment). There is unlimited downloads for this but not sure if you can store the maps so just get one years subs and download all the irish maps ?
Bushnell have some relatively cheap units but the battery life gets slated in a lot of reviews. Uses igolf software and annual sub can be got for $40.
The more expensive units allow you to add your own markers/hazards etc to get extra distance fixes but I'm looking for my old man so the more basic the better.

Have you considered a range finder as opposed to a GPS?
