iPhone 3GS - Exchange email and VPN questions

Just looking for advise on the following.

Thinking of getting iPhone 3GS. I will want to set up VPN on it and synch with my Microsoft Exchange mail server.
Reading the bump on Apple website I see no reason why it can't be done.

My concern is that if I synch with my exchange mailbox, I am going to immedietely upload a hugh amount of existing data on to the iPhone.
Going forward, I will continue to add to that data at a fair old rate.
I gat a LOT of emails with big attachments. Powerpoints, cad drawings, pictures, etc, etc.

How to proceed without overwhelming the iPhone with emails?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

I've used VPN with the iPhone for streaming TV, and it works fine.

Not sure about exchange, though, but regarding the mails, the e-mail client is fairly intelligent. It basically leaves the mails on the mail server, only downloading the most recent 10,20 or whatever. Also, it doesn't store attachments on the phone, it only downloads them when you open them.
