How to find out what career suits me...

    Hey Folks,

I'm so bored in my work.

I'm not being ungrateful for having a job. I'm so thankful for having one, and it's not a bad job.

I'm just so bored, and feel like I'm being wasted. Have been feeling like this for years. Surely there are jobs out there that People are actually passionate about and enjoy doing to an extent?

I am working in a Secretarial role in a big company that I have no interest in. All of my previous office jobs have been similar. Very little interest, and in the end I just couldn't stay there.

    This is getting me down.

Has anyone been in this position? Are there any aptitude tests that I could take to see if they would highlight my strengths and maybe put me in the right direction for something. I would be more than happy to go back to College, but I jump one day from wanting to be a Photographer, to an Occupational Therapist, to being a beautitian! It's frustrating and I don't know what to do..

And advice or links would be great, thanks

I did this and basically every job I have ever considered was on it, so while it probably won't narrow the field, it might give you something to think about.

Even if you are bored in your job, do something in your own time that interests you, keep busy and the work week probably won't be so bad, at least until you ind something you really want to do!

Have you ever thought about doing an aptitude test? I used to be highly sceptical about their usefulness- but I bought a book of aptitude tests and sat down and did a few. It might point you in directions that you might not otherwise normally consider? You can do formal aptitude test (indeed many jobs insist on you doing them as part of the recruitment process). I dislike these- as they don't tend to give you a good indication of the relevance of your score in particular areas- and how you might apply this to your career choices etc.

Have you considered that after the honeymoon period, most jobs are fairly boring?

I dont mean to be negative, simply want to point out that 6 months after changing (your decent) job, you might be in the same situation, or an even worse one? & with less seniority, and time of service!

so dont forget about the positive aspects of having a good steady job, when weighing up your decision.

Get yourself a copy of this book. Was going through something similar myself a few years back and it helped.

    Howdy,

I bought a copy of 'What color is your parachute' (available from good bookshops) and worked thru the exercises in it. It helped me as lot. Put the work in, it's worth it!

    +1 on the career directions

When i tried it a few months ago, there's questions you can answer and it will show you a list of careers you're suited to. There's a hundred or so questions but the most weirdest thing was that the very thing i want to do came up on top. I want to do vet nursing and all the careers to do with animals came up on top. From horse rider, grooming, veterinary medicine, zoology.
